I don't see the brighter side. People are shocked by this because it feels like a betrayal of shared values. I'm not sure we're entitled to feel that way, but I have to admit I feel it, too. I've admired Grimes for her music, but also for her explicit commitment to feminism, anti-racism, anti-imperialism, and anti-capitalism. These are political and moral stances that many of her fans share. It may be incomprehensible to those who are only interested in the music, but for some of us, knowing that your fave musicians relate to the world the same way you do is an important part of how you relate to the musician themselves.
If this news is true, it tells me that Grimes' ways of relating to the world have changed. It suggests that she's no longer anti-imperialist or anti-capitalist, because how serious can you be about that when you're dating a billionaire CEO who is on the record for treating his workers terribly? To the extent that we're all part of the capitalist machine, someone like Elon Musk is on top; he helps control the machine. This is why people are surprised and/or upset about this development. It feels like she's turned her back on the counter-culture from which she came.
For what it's worth, I'm not sure I believe the news yet. I'm holding out hope that it's a result of sensationalised reporting, and that they attended the Ball together as friends.
