Wow still has sub numbers(millions) other mmo's can only dream of, if they dropped to 100,000 it'd still be financially viable. Not to mention everything they earn through the store etc. I'm bored as fuck on the game at the moment however heh
I think the problem is Blizzard went against the core demographic that made them the gold standard for mmorpgs in the first place. Back in the days of vanilla and burning crusade , there was none of this mindless get-to-max-level-in-a-day thing, it took work, now you just need the heirlooms and lfg system. There were no pet battles or collectable vanity pets save one or two, there was no garrison stations to do your professions for you or items that auto leveled your professions to match each continent respectively. Blizzard has gone so far toward the family and kid friendly aspects of play that they've all but alienated actual gamers who don't want mindless time wasting , they want a game.
The lfg system destroyed the whole social aspect of game play. You used to habe trade chat on ant given server bursting with pug raids , guild recruiting for instances and pvp and end game content , and other fun things like lvl 1 hogger raids and other bullshit like that. Having a guild wasn't just for social reasons back in the day , it was a necessity if you wanted to raid end game content and get geared , raid night was the most fun of any classic wow players week, you went to a buddies, you logged into vent and you ran Kara over the course of 6 hours. Now all that is gone and in exchange you join a que with a bunch of randoms, you follow a mass group around and button mash till it's over. No loot rolls , no building relationships with wow friends , none of that. This was in my opinion the biggest loss the game has suffered , because it transferred into other parts of the game as well.
With professions being streamlined and garrison followers having the ability to, for example , do all your engineering, tailoring and enchanting for you , you don't need anyone else to have professions at max lvl in order to get what you need, shit you yourself don't even need them. This also contributed to the dieing our of trade chat and player to player connectivity.
