The proposal is actually causing me some discomfort, because I've been planning for awhile to propose to her during the week we are spending at her families house for Christmas. They've never said anything before, but I'm a mixed race son (I'm half east Indian and half white) and they are really traditional southerners. They've always been nice to me and her father even helped get into prestigious graduate program, but it's still always in the back of my mind. I've tried to bring it up, but she always dismisses it. My parents aren't very wealthy and me and my brother worked to help my parents keep things afloat. My brother had it harder since he was older. He sacrificed a ton when it comes to his education so that I could do what I wanted. Not really relevant, but just wanted you to understand why I'm getting these feelings. So even when I visit her family I feel out of place even though they don't treat me differently. My gf and all get siblings were raised to act and think a certain way. For example, her brother was given a BMW M3 out of high school because they can be seen driving a Toyota or a Honda. While I've learned from my parents struggles to be frugal. When we first started dating my gf and I would have really different view points on things and buying name brand, etc. I've never really concerned myself with how others perceive me based on the things I own, but they were trained to act a certain way and but certain things to give the right perception. Maybe these are just feelings of inadequacy, but I really want to get over this before I propose to her.
