Put thousand or so rounds through it this far never jammed. Fairly accurate. Easy to break down

I just bought one as well and took it shooting this past weekend. I can only compare to the berreta 92 as that's the only other gun I've shot but this p320 is amazing. Easy trigger, great sights, and easy to clean. It's also good because if you get the urge to increase the caliber size... You can easily do it.

1. Take it to /k/. A magical place. We're always friendly and eager to shove our opinions down your throat.

2. Join a range. Try out the pistols they have available. Fingerfuck the pistols they have for sale and talk to the people there, explain what you want and don't like in a pistol. What makes a great gun store or range are the people that work there and their experience.

3. A red dot is a cat toy. Aftermarket.

This. Try before you buy. Its not just about quality. It has to fit your hand. The safety and mag button need to be where you can easily and instinctively get to them without accidentally thumbing them. Make sure the slide isn't going to hit you, and that the recoil is comfortable and easy to control. Put as much care into the holster selection, that it fits you and the gun.

no, they stopped for the police because they were using revolvers up until the 70's and went for S&W 40. cal pistols, then switched to 9mm after the 80's.
As for the military it was because of NATO standardization for pistol rounds.
Stick to COD new friendo.

Can't go wrong with a sig sauer. However, if I had to choose one single gun and couldn't own any other one, it would be a Glock.
Not because it's the best weapon out there (it's not) but for the sole reason of unlimited aftermarket parts.
Add a custom trigger for example. That will make the gun so much nicer.
And if you ever are in a shit hits the fan scenario, chances are you will run into other people with glocks for spare magazines and stuff.
>>
This sounds like a troll post, but whatever.

Glocks are great handguns, but a bit expensive. Personally I don’t feel the need to own a gun, but if I did, my obvious choice would be a glock 19. I’ve shot a lot of handguns but that’s the one I keep coming back to.

However, i actually think the p320 is a good choice. IMO its probably the most similar to the glock in terms of how it shoots. Problem is that people who know more about this than I do tell me it’s poorly manufactured and unreliable (which admittedly is strange for a sig sauer but whatever).

A red dot sight (or really any optics other than a standard iron sight) on a handgun is pretty stupid.

Other handguns I’d give hard looks at are any CZ-based model and the M+Ps. Maybe some of the other fancy European makers if you feel like blowing money

Yep... Bun fun on the range to show your friends. :D Serious self defense at 3 feet does not use "sights" at all..

Well these are people who go up against the worst criminals in the country. Literally the kind of groups that will band together and have a shootout with LAPD because they know there aren't always enough cops to effectively combat 10-20 guys with guns. I'm not saying trust Californians because I sure as hell don't. But LAPD SWAT I'd be more intimidated by than any other department in the country.

Pretty much all modern polymer framed guns have stainless slides that are also nitrocarburized for rust resistance. It was a great advantage 30 years ago and basically started with Glocks back in the 1980s, nowadays it's pretty standard.

>>
>>767501157
Muzzle energy determines the newtons of force that's going to knock you on your ass. Personally, I prefer 10mm the most because even though it's slimmer than .45ACP it moves faster than even 9mm and will have more stopping power. And more capacity. You also have to think "soft, fleshy targets" implies people don't have bones (that are going to absorb the bullet well) that will cause shock inducing pain regardless of physically "stopping" someone.

They have higher grade armor and operate in teams. Even if it was for show they're not dealing with traffic tickets everyday. So their odds at living are still better than any volunteer Depewtee.

>>
>>767502540
Stainless steel used in firearms is typically 410 or 416, which can still rust if not taken care of properly. Higher grade stainless is too cost-prohibitive to work with to make it worth it.
>>
>>767503550

I have only seen two cases of stainless steel rust in guns.

1. The steel is just super poorly made and poorly mixed and the fucked up steel rusts in places due to very poor metallurgy.

2. The steel is next to wood or other materials that leach chemicals that manage to cause rust. Usually very minor cleanup.

I have seen guns from flooded out gun safes that are recovered from seawater after two months.
Steel guns 100% dead, stainless guns just a good cleaning and surface polishing...

One caution about stainless though is that is has very high friction and you will need to lubricate it very well. The modern coatings now solve a lot of that until they wear through.

But if your gunplay is in or near water, stainless is a MUST!

The initial size of the bullet and the expanded size are what transfers force to the target. The 5.7 will go straight through someone. .45 ACP causes hydrostatic shock and larger diameter wound channels, which is what you want in a defensive situation.

>>767497874

>>767497089
No. There are a couple of reasons why the military and police may have stopped using them widespread but the gun itself nor the caliber were reasons for that. The 1911 itself was a reliable handgun and the 45. is a powerful round. Thing is, 45. Doesn't do very well ballistically in the sense that it's slow, short-lived, and it's larger surface area usually disperses more of the force outward as opposed to inward. The 9mm sort of provides a balance between these two effects, though in general as a previous anon said there are higher-velocity rounds popping up more and more often - the 10mm being a great example because it's right at the same size as the 45. but higher velocity.

Yes, there was also that the 1911 didn't have stellar capacity - But look at even the compact models and the capacities can range from 10 to the standard, full size models which hold 16, and that's just what I've seen. There's also various 9mm, 40. S&W, and even 357. SIG (I believe) chambered versions that can carry more. The Marines still occasionally use these. If OP is looking for a carry pistol (and I doubt he'll be facing anyone with even a Level I graded ballistic vest) then the 45. Should actually be a good carry pistol because it rarely overpenetrates and disperses most of it's force around the AOI as opposed to into the target. 9mm has similar effects, but just saying the 45. is in no way a bad choice.
>>
>>767507628
The 1911 is 100+ years old...

>>767499143
however while the .45 acp might have more kick, it doens't have more footpounds, the 9mm does much more damage and will go through the target easier than a 45 acp due to it being a rather large and slow round all in all
>>
>>767508135
How old is the revolver design and by comparison how often is it used by people for self defense? I'm not making the argument that it's the best damn gun on the market, numbskull, I'm not even a FAN of the 1911. But it's a design that still works and regardless of what you may think there a very, VERY good reason it hasn't faded away in fame over those years and that is because it is a reliable, workable design of legendary status. The Glock may have a working reputation too and is no doubt the firearm you'll see in the hands of many officers and even some military units around the world. It may be soon just as an iconic design.

Tell any one who knows ANYTHING about firearms what you just told me and they'll tell you just what I'm saying: The browning design has NOT failed in it's 100 year existence and there he's a reason for that.
>>
>>767507200
But the 5.7 has very little recoil so very little time to be back on target, and for a gun kept in house or in car, can assume 30 round capacity. Just keep shooting.
>>
>>767509220
Absolutely. But the Five seven isn't really a Self Defense pistol - It's just not put together for that, and neither is the round. High velocity means greater chance of overpenetration and that's not something you want in self defense. That being said, Five SeveNs are way cool guns but also they're pricy as all hell.

I EDC a Glock 34 and it's a bit heavy but it's also a tack driver. As someone said above, go to a range, learn about different handguns and finger fuck everything to find out what you like and dislike. Find that happy medium that does everything you want it to. I like the M&P as it's a really well rounded gun, but I'm not sure I'd own another.

>>767509448

But really, try say a Sig P365... It will kill a fuck just as dead far more easily and with far less worries or troubles....

Not to argue here on /b/ :D ]]

But really step back and look at all the guns out there and what the best ones are for a given task.

When someone tells me "this is a better gun for that". They are almost always right :)

Don't get a full sized pistol. They may not seem heavy when you first hold them, but trust me. After hours and hours of carrying them, they get super annoying really fast.

Get a compact everyday carry. I recommend the Ruger SR40c.

The Kahr CM-9 is very easy to carry. But the heavy spring and odd trigger pull was too hard on my old hands.

Now the P365 solves all that but it really is a bit bulky with some sharps edges. But it shoots like a God damn dream!

I'm am a little less worried these days if someone may suspect that the old guy has a gun in his pocket...

Buy one of the compact glocks (19, 23, etc). Only shitty thing about glocks are factory sights. Replace and you’ve got yourself a decent gun for a good price. If I remember correctly, the 320 has a shitty trigger.

I have a full size 320. Great pistol. I'd say skip the RX and go for the X5 instead. It's almost the same price, and you can always add the red dot later if it's something you really want. They have X5's at Cabela's here in ABQ for $875.

It all depends on what you want to use it for. If you want something to carry, I'd go way smaller. I carry a m&p shield and use the 320 as my range toy.

The new ones are slightly more efficient. However, efficiency was not the primary criteria for my choice. It can operate in its wheel-well height of snow, take a hit, and defends a non-fatality streak eight years running. Also, there are unfounded claims the windshield can slow 9mm rounds to non-fatal velocities.

Define poke. Most semi autos are more blocky and smooth on the sides, so not really.
A revolver's cylinder can stick out a little bit more.

As with any gun, a proper holster and belt are key

you have to find the position and the gun that works best for you. I used to carry a G19 and found it a little to large for me to wear comfortably. I carry a Shield now because of how thin it is. I wear it at the 5 O'Clock position and love it. It barely feels like I'm wearing anything at all. A Glock 43 is another good choice for CC since it is thin as well.
>>
>>767492706

>>767517452
Over penetration is a meme. You are so much more likely to just flat out miss and hit someone than for the bullet to pass thru a target
>>
>>767517452

OP didn't say it was for home defense. Only a tac shotgun for home defense. For reliable shooting, a revolver will do. Guaranteed not to jam. All misfires will still cycle. Just learn how to reload it quickly.

Glock realistically is a brand that's so great that people have to make things to complain about. Some anti-Glock fags say the sights are inaccurate, they're dead on at 50 yards (and you should be using a rifle if you want to reach out further than that). And then there's the meme Glocknade, the early first run of .40 cal Glocks *could* explode with hand loaded ultra-powerful .40 caliber rounds (but any standard round would be fine). They corrected this problem almost immediately.

Glock is a great first gun. I recommend Glock 19 very highly. It's the number one bestselling handgun in America for a reason.

You don't need a red dot for "babby's first gun" and it's just gonna make it harder to holster or carry. Also, I'd steer clear of the "prestige brands" Colt, Sig, Benelli, etc. Honestly, they're no better than your everyman's Glock and twice as expensive. In all products, you have the good brands, that there's nothing wrong with and the prestige brands that cost double (and it's basically just a status symbol thing like wearing a Rolex).

If that's what you want as a first gun, that's fine. But know that most people who intend to take up shooting as a hobby never commit (just like people who intend to take up playing guitar). You'll likely take it to the range twice and have it be an expensive paperweight until you have a financial emergency and need to sell it for cash.

Get a normal gun ffs. You're not gonna get pussy for having a fancier gun than the other guys at the range.
>>

>>
>>767517607

>>
>>767517644
99.99% of people's "practice" is standing at a range and shooting for fun.
Good luck hitting anything out of a dead sleep, or in a stressful situation like any that involve using a gun for defense.

Even if you practice for those situations you won't be anywhere close to a crack shot in the moment.

It's like 1.5 pounds of gun in you pocket. Sort of heavy and floppy. If you bend down or get out of a car you think about not letting it drop on the ground and all that. But it is very easy to get used to.

You really forget about it most of the time.

Also, there is a sizable differnce in velocity between a 3.5"/.45 compact and a full frame 5". Enough that it matters. Compact .45s are shit. 9mm matches it. Unless you go 5" plusP.

>>
>>767519957
There are four stages people seem go go through.

1. Carrying the gun around unloaded just to see if it is going to do anything crazy. Just to learn what it is like.

2. Loaded but not chambered. It serious now but still very safe as you learn to mentally deal with it.

3. Loaded and chamber and thinking about it a lot. Being very careful to avoid any fuck ups..

4. Carry all the time now and it's no big deal. Really don't think about it much at all.

Some awkward moments like today when I was going to rest groceries on my leg but stopped since that would put the gun in an awkward state. Getting out of my deep seat sports car is always a bit awkward still. But in the end it's very easy to carry.
