You get access to the best removal so that helps. Mines a punisher build with things like spreading plague and no mercy. That paired with a ton of removal and boardwipes makes the things like mogis and torment of hail fire game winners. If you play with a lot of creature centric decks then this is a great choice to take them on.

>>767275955
What, for Omnath? I have a metric shitload of cards that search up lands and put them directly onto the field, as well as cards that let me play extra lands every turn. I can usually get him out turn 4 or 5, and can continually get more lands afterwards. With the average amount of creature removal a single deck runs, it's rarely difficult to recover from a Path or whatever.

Now in multiplayer, yeah, I can get hated out fairly easily, assuming I stand to be the biggest threat, which isn't too unlikely. But in 1v1 I'm usually fine.

I like this for a multiplayer zombie apocalypse deck
>>
>>767276001
I feel like it's more necessary to be able to win without your commander in multiplayer. Since more opponents=more removal to worry about. I guess it's not as big a deal if you like to play low-threat-level commanders, but a lot of the most fun commanders do relatively crazy shit.

In any case, most of my decks can win without my Commander being out. Omnath and my Yahenni deck are the only two that don't fare so well without them.

This. I use her as pillowfort, but I let my opponents destroy each other while they fight over monarch. Think about it like this. Phyrexian Arena costs 1 life to draw 1 extra card. That's a great deal. But monarch costs a great deal more life for that 1 extra card. So let your opponents take that deal, and then just finish them off in the endgame.

Commander is a format of Magic the Gathering with the following rules.

>Players build decks of exactly 100 cards, with no repeating cards save for basic lands.

>One of those 100 cards is a legendary creature who acts as the "commander" of the deck. The deck can only include colors the commander identifies as.

>The commander starts play in the command zone, an area that they can be played as if they were in your hand (but they're not in your hand.) If your commander leaves play at any time for any reason, you may put them back in the command zone.

>Every time your commander re-enters the command zone, it costs 2 colorless mana extra to play.

>If a single commander does 21 combat damage to another player, that player dies.

>Everyone starts with 40 life.

I think that covers everything.
>>
>>767283888

>>767284079
It's important to note that it's a 4-player format, and politics are really important. Which is to say, openly colluding with players, making deals (and keeping your word or breaking it, along with the consequences) is a big part of the game.
>>
>>767284210
Commander can be played anywhere from 2-6 players.

You can play with even more, but be prepared for at least a 3 hour game if someone's not using boardwipe or insta-win combos.
>>
>>767284210
>>767284305

That sounds like a ton of fun.
I assume only one can win? So it's a last man standing out of four, and whoever jews the best, wins.

I'd use edhrec *dot* com to go through and see which commanders ar popular, which ones do what you want them to do, and which ones seem like fun. Additionally, the site will show you popular cards used in conjunction with the commanders so you can build a super gay/broken deck to annihilate your friends with.

Assuming you have the money, of course.

Also, the Dominaria set that was just released is great for commander since the set is stacked with a whole bunch of legendary creatures.

My last couple of cards are on their way to finish up Edgar Markov so I'm hyped as hell.

Probably going to do Animar, Phelddagrif, or Yidris next.

Also rules check, does Coat of Arms double dip or is it, "Amount of creatures that share a type -1" and does Cathar's Crusade give a counter to the creature that just entered causing Cathar's Crusade to trigger?
>>
>>767284600
Explain
>>
>>767283372
It's easier to look it up than to have someone explain it, but essentially, you pick a legendary creature to be your commander, and then build a 100 card deck around that creature (100 cards including the commander). You can't have more than one copy of any card in the deck other than basic lands, and you can't use cards that don't match your commander's color identity.

You start the game with the commander in the command zone, where it can't be fucked with in any way other than you casting it. If it would change zones (go from the battlefield to your hand, hand to your graveyard, battlefield to exile, etc.) you can choose to send it back to the command zone instead so you can cast it again. But every time you cast it from the command zone after the first time, it costs an accumulating 2 additional mana.

The appeal is that it's not as easy to break as other formats, and it's meant to be a casual, social format, usually played in groups of 4. And it's fun to build and play the decks. Most decks are built around the commander's abilities, so a deck built around most of the creatures here would probably expand on what that creature does. It's just a way to build fun, interesting, thematic, and unique decks and have fun playing Magic.

That turned out to be a longer explanation than I thought it would.
>>
>>767285077
Have you ever seen anybody pull off anything more than a 3 colour deck? I've only ever seen people do 3 maximum, and even then their decks had to be tight as hell.
Only time I could see anything more being viable would be if you're sperging and want to play sliver deck. But that was years ago, so.
>>767285527
Thanks anon, the more I hear the more interesting it sounds.
I do remember fondly the days of trying to make the stupidest combo to break my mates decks, so this format does sound like a nice way to get back into it. Also sounds like you could have more variety in decks, building around the commander rather than creature type etc.
>>
>>767283530
Yeah he used to be in my 60-card casual Gruul Bloodrush deck. Dump a bunch of lands, make a bunch of dudes, use said lands to pay multiple bloodrush costs, and finish the game off. It was fun but he's way more fun as a commander.

This is my current go-to 5-color commander. Tons of fun.
>>
>>767284480
Careful which ones you buy. Anything more than a two-color deck is going to be crappy right out of the box, and you'll have to spend a pretty penny on fetch lands and other such things in order to make sure you can play all your stuff.
>>
>>767285458
I'm not really sure what you're getting at with your first question. Coat of Arms only gives +1s, not -1s. It also affect your opponents' creatures, as well, so watch out for that.

Your second question is yes, creatures entering the battlefield gives those creatures themselves the +1/+1 counters, and that triggers for every creature that enters. So if you have 5 1/1s enter, they'll each come in with 5 counters on them.

This can be insanely powerful in go-wide token-heavy decks like Rhys the Redeemed, but my fucking god, it is hard to keep track of all of those counters. I used to use it in my Rhys deck but I cut it because it very quickly became overwhelming and confusing. And the sheer amount of tokens that deck puts out is more than enough to kill my opponents without needing power boosts.
>>
>>767285924
If that's your commander, that makes it 10x more viable I imagine. Does look like you could cause trouble with that
>>767285936
I intend to not go more than two colours, 3 colours is in my mind once you've got a handle on the game and good amount of shekels and cards.

Cheers anons for the advice
>>
>>767286314

Awesome, I didn't know Cathar's also buffed the creatures entering.

For Coat of Arms what I'm wondering is if I have multiple Vampire Knights would it be +2/+2?
>>
>>767273408

>>
>>767285653
Even 3 colors can be difficult. I'd recommend starting with 2 colors. Just be aware that mana ramp and card draw are much more importan in commander due to the way decks are built. So it's a good idea to avoid building mono-red, mono-white, or red-white decks, at least starting out, because those colors don't do either of those things very well. There are a couple of commanders in those colors that can do all right, but most of them are going to be painful.

That's just advice though, obviously if you see a legendary creature you really like and want to build a deck around it, go for it.

When I played with The Mime I had a very disposable income. I had all the corresponding duals, fetches and counters. My deck was up to $1200-$1300 easy.

I consistently got him out and was a threat almost every game. But playing a $1300 deck against my buddies with only a couple hundred invested wasn't much fun so I downgraded a lot.

Even in games against strangers with comparable decks I used to smash.
>>
>>767286582
Not anymore, they changed that rule a while back. Also, color identity is not the same as card color. Color identity also includes mana symbols in a card's text box, as well as the normal criteria for card color. So that creature's color identity is WUBRG.

Commander is the least dick-measuring-contest format there is. Unless you're just playing with overly-competitive people, which is expressly what the format *isn't* supposed to be. Every other format is full of turn 2-4 wins, 5 minute games, and, in standard's case, stupid card limitations. Also, tryhards galore, due to the potential to win big in tournaments.

Commander doesn't even have official tournaments, which puts off a lot of those hyper-competitive players since they can't get money off playing it. Like legit, the whole concept of commander was built on the idea of having laid-back, casual, fun games of magic and discouraging early-game infinite combos and other annoying bullshit.

I have a reaper king deck that I made for shits and giggles using basically no shocklands, just a few manastones, chromatic lantern and random dual lands I have, some guildgates even.
Rarely if ever have the mana problems though.

No love for just immediately locking everyone else out of the game in the least interactive way possible? Watching the hope fade from new players' faces when I explain the teferi/knowledge pool interaction (turn 3-5 average case, turn 1 in magical christmasland) is one of the best feelings in magic.

Try it, you'll like it

How do you do that right? All you do is annoy everybody and make doing anything a pain in the ass.
If a bunch of hydras are giving you trouble:
Go mardu and wrath/kill everything
Go golgari and make them sac everything
Go dimir and steal all their shit
Go simic/temur and counter all their shit, with your own hydras to fight theirs
There's so much more you could do, anon

Pretty much dude. Idk about you but all the groups I've played with didn't hate a locked down or controlled boardstate, but no one I've ever met likes bullshit chaosrandumb cards

>>767298818
Best interaction, sure. The guy I replied to was looking for a chaos deck, though. Yidris fits that bill pretty well on his own, and with this card in play, it'd get really crazy.

>all the groups I've played with didn't hate a locked down or controlled boardstate

Bull. Shit. "Oh, look, I can't do anything at all. This is great. I don't hate this one bit." Riiiiight.

A lot of people like chaos decks if they're not played too often. If they are they lose the charm and just become repetitive, but if you only break it out once in a great while? People will usually roll with it unless they have a stick up their ass.
