You don't know much about Venus do you?
>>
>>752897177
Because Venus is an extremely hostile environment. Acidic atmosphere, and a surface temperature of several hundred degrees celcius pretty much prevents any hope of colonization. On mars, you would beed breathing apparatus and air tight buildings, on venus, you would need bresthing apparatus, airtight, heavily insulated buildings with active cooling systems, resistant to extremes of acidity, and you could never go outside.

Good enough sciencefag?

There's actually a small movement of people that think we should build floating colonies on Venus. They would need to be dense enough to ride in the upper atmosphere where temperatures are more reasonable. Seems stupid in the long term

Mars has water and it would be easier for us to teraform a cold planet by causing a greenhouse effect. Cooling Venus, on the other hand, is impossible with current technologies.

We, therefore, the representatives of this Martian colony, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the universe for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of this colony, solemnly publish and declare, that Mars is, and of right ought to be a free and independent planet; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the United Nations of Earth, and that all political connection between them and the planet Earth, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as a free and independent planet, have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent planets may of right do. And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

The reason we explore is to learn, and so some of us are out there in case some catastrophe happens at home. This sticking your head up your ass zero-sum mentality of yours is a cowardly retreat from the wonders of the universe.

venus is closer to the sun and the first problem we are going to encounter on earth is the sun being too intense to allow liquid water on the surface

that said, mars is unfeasible as well due to lack of magnetic field

the best candidates as it stands are titan, europa, or enceladus since they will survive the added luminosity, possibly survive the sun's phase change, and the large magnetic fields of the gas giants would provide the needed radiation shielding

Someone make the infographic detailing the outline of colonizing and terraforming Venus in the 200-300 year window

Pros
Gravity (90%) Earth's
Closest planet
31miles up 72 deg / normalized pressure

Challenges
Reducing space entry barrier (light propulsion or remote powered launches)
Constructing solar shades creating day/night cycles
Addressing the magnetosphere

Produce links and document research and get this info to the places it needs to go

>Old Earth snowflakes beg for the white man to come back (check Zimbabwe)

We are doing our best to increase knowledge and learn about our universe, while progressively cheating death a little more every generation. you guys speak of this terraforming like its that simple

you cannot terraform mars because of one simple reason

NO MAGNETOSPHERE

earth has a really good magnetosphere that protects us and our atmosphere from the extreme amounts of radiation that the sun produces

without the magnetosphere the solar wind would blow most of out atmosphere away and fry most forms of life within hours.

thats what happened to mars thats why the planets atmosphere is so thin and mostly carbon dioxide.

( and for those of who you know absolutely nothing: gravity is not the same thing as magnetism in this case.)

so unless you can figure out how to jumpstart the planets metal core rotation and restore the magnetic field of the planet then theres no way to terraform the planet

Not OP here. Extreme colds are easier to deal with: a foot of fibreclass insulation plus bog standard heater will get a Mars dwelling up to sustainable temperatures. Its called supply and demand. The demand will never end for clothing or food or at least mot for a very very very long time and the supply will forever be as well. its not like you just fund it once and the problems gone forever. more people are born , clothing fades, hours go by and youre hungry. Now im sure your pee brain is thinking we could use some sort of forced labor to get this simple task of feeding and clothing everyone. Ill assure you the economy doesnt flourish this way. It will become stagnant and weak. IE north korea or soviet russia. Unfortunantly in reality some things do better then others. On a good note in capitalism everyone has a chance to work their way to the top and succeed beyond their wildest expectations. In a communist or similar situation people are working for free and nobody likes to be forced to work for free. about 1/4 of my labor already goes toward taxation. Anymore and youll make working not worth the efforts.

>cience can come back in a few generations and be just fine
Holy shit, a luddite who doesn't even understand the most basic principles.

No, you can't just drop science and come back in a few generations. It requires tens of thousands to many millions of people with highly specialized skills, entire industries, production capacity, and so on -- not to mention if we dropped science we'd have to kill everyone but about 500 million people, which is a rough estimate of the planet's ability to support people before modern agriculture.

You're arguing for genocide and a return to the neolithic.

do you understand how access works? or that the majority of the poor on this planet aren't poor by choice, but because they have terrible economies brought on by the greedy and selfish? level the economic playing field and you don't need to continuously take care of people. it's a "teach a man to fish" scenario. capitalism is a zero sum game, it leads down a path where all the money funnels into one pocket.

you should work because it makes you a part of society. if you can't do anything unless you get rewarded, you're no better than a child that won't clean their room without allowance. grow up and sacrifice a bit to make the world better.

Somebody shat on that clear water lake your town is pumping from or you get complete circulation if there is no fresh water source nearby. Either way, your sewage gets cleaned up, dumped to a lake and ocean, gets pumped back, clean'd up again and into your tap it goes.

Calling it what it is doesn't change anything.

Treated sewerage water goes into the ocean.
Through a natural series of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, 100% fresh water get a dropped above land and sinks into artesians and aquifers.

>>
>>752901129
No, space travel is the guarantee of the future of the human race. The Earth is fragile; one gamma ray burst, errant comet, really nasty plague, or the like and we're gone. And that's not even counting human-induced methods. So the benefit is literally the entire value of all our species has ever and will ever produce. Now, that's catastrophic planning, so the probability is low. But even though most people's houses won't flood, there's a reason people buy flood insurance. Space travel is insurance for the planet.

The other benefits are literally incalculable. Because while we can talk about zero-g industries or asteroid mining or the like, we don't have any real way to measure the benefits. But the potential is huge. So it's a high risk/high reward assessment. And like any portfolio, you need a balance between steady and sure producers, and those with a high potential for growth. We absolutely need basic research, and we need exploration into different environments.

>>

i would say gambling on that is like not feeding your children to spend money at the horse race. the potential reward could set you up for life but there's a low probability that you'll get anything out of it, and everybody in your home starves.

You heard of a diversified portfolio, haven't you? Put the bulk of your resources into steady, low risk investments; and a minority into high risk/high reward investments. That keeps you safe, makes your portfolio productive, but also gives you the chance to really grow when things are exceptional. That's the best method when it comes to n financial planning, and should also be true for investments in science.

No, you can't. Earth's magnetosphere, the strongest (most dense) in the solar system, is the result of a liquid magnet many times the mass of the moon rotating in the core. False. It's based on the idea that we NEED to advance as quickly as possible. If we just chug along making routine, easy, guaranteed improvements, things will only incremental get better. We need to set aside a portion of our resources on the high risk stuff, because that's where we get the spectacular improvements like the enlightenment, the green revolution, and the other improvements that improved the quality if life for everyone on the planet over the past several centuries. Your argument is the conservative one, the safe one, and it's also the one that guarantees that things won't really improve all that much. We need more than that.

The reason it drops is because to manufacture commercial products drops and so will the similar products and materials used for space flights. With out all the red tape, oversight, and a bit of capitalist motivation, shit gets done.

To some degree, but without a fundamental revolution it's still a matter of mass vs. the gravity well, and that's hideously expensive. The "problem" of people breeding too quickly is really only on Africa anymore. Asia (China and India) will grow slightly, but for the most part their share of the global population will be quite stable. Africa though will triple or quadruple their share of the global population (12%-40%) in only the next hundred years, and who knows what growth does after that. Africa is also demonstrably the continent of the least intelligent and least capable. We could solve this problem by merely stopping aid to Africa. About half, fucking half, of Africa's GDP is from aid. The other half represents the first transaction of that aid, and from there it's all waste. We're furiously breeding the worst among us, creating a global welfare system that can only either further hamper the developed world, or end in mass starvation and war when it is withdrawn.

Yes, Africa is the problem, and the solution is to leave them with their own devices for a few generations, let them achieve a sustainable population with what devices they have, and then come back.
