A mary sue is a character that ends up being a self insert for people, usually referring to when writers can't write female characters well and end up just giving them asspulls and making them a chassis on which to put ridiculous powers. Typically the writers have them always win because they can't think of anything else and can't write well.
Ruby hardly wins every fight she's in, she's actually the least versatile character in her series.
Visual character design has nothing to do with mary sues, but I'm sure you didn't read any of this.
