Here's why you and that comic creator are retarded: You missed the point of the show so much you think the most basic interpretation is funny instead of obvious.
The show is satirical of mecha. Most mecha are really stupid action cartoons that appeal mostly to dumb children (IE. You) the approach of Evangelion was: "Well, realistically, what would be the realities of living in a mecha world?" That's the most basic, the most obvious and fundamental point of the show and it was completely lost on you.
Yeah, there's a fine line between depth and pretentious. For example, if you can only understand language at a sixth grade level the very word 'pretentious' seems pretentious, it's just you wouldn't be able to describe it and would probably resort to ignorantly mocking anyone who used the word.

I watched Gun Grave a while back and actually enjoyed the overall story arch of the brothers. I wasn't a huge fan of post-death but it was still a good story.
I also really liked the arc of Darker than Black even though it was essentially monster of the week until the last few episodes (at least the powers were interesting).
