You have to get your work out somehow, and it's much easier if you frequent a location that allows potential clients direct access to you. That's what I mean by how I did this accidentally when speaking in my WoW guild.
I fail to see how this would cause an artist to "crash and burn", unless they have no concept of their own workload and ability and promise more than they can deliver. Do a piece or two probono, gauge reaction, and let word-of-mouth spread for you. I'd wager a guess that that's how most of these people who became popular started out, considering the subject matter of their works.
You sure as shit won't become popular by doing nothing at all, though.
