Should the federal minimum wage in America be raised to $15.00 an hour?

What are your thoughts /b/?
>>
raised?

go die in fire
>>
>>769180994
no because we have to pay more taxes if we get higher wages, so no.
>>
Why not?
>>
I say the US should have the same minimum wage as Iceland and Austria
>>
No. That just replaces jobs with robots.
>>
>minimum wage goes up
>price of literally everything goes up
>it is now just as hard to make a living as before
>>
There would probably be massive layoffs in response, since many smaller businesses often can't afford paying less important employees that much.
>>
it will raise anyway.
>>
>>769180994
lemme break it down so that even a retarded millenial can understand

>minimum wage goes up to $x per hour
>your landlord now has to pay his maintenance crew more money per hour
>your landlord has to pay his painting crew more money per hour
>your landlord has to pay his landscaping crew more money per hour
>your rent goes up to compensate
>all the grocery store owners now have to pay their employees more money per hour
>the price of all groceries goes up
Your wages went up, but so did the cost of living. There is zero net benefit.

are you starting to get the picture, retard?
>>
>>769181158
It has never and will never be a 1 to 1 raise tard. Wages aren't 100% of cost of business. Lets say on the high end, wages take 40% of cost. So you raise wages to double where they are now. You only have to raise prices roughly 40% to cover the raise. But everyone is making DOUBLE the money, spending more, and creating a better economy.

A $5 burger is now $7. But instead of making $3/hr more than the burger cost, you make $7 more. And the more money that gets dumped into the economy, the more profit businesses make and the more they hire people.

>>769181133
This will happen no matter what.
>>
>>769181395
And don't forget that if wages are mandated to go up, then employers will raise the requirements to get a job. If you're gonna pay someone $15 an hour to flip burger then that fucker is going to have experience with Office
>>
>>769181395
>I don't understand wage costs the post
>I don't understand basic economics the post

So why don't you make $0.50/hr anymore?
>>
>>769180994
Or we can just kill the federal minimum wage and a ton of welfare programs and replace them with a UBI/reverse income tax
>>
>>769181133
also this.

you think employers are gonna pay your dumb, entitled ass FIFTEEN fucking dollars per HOUR to bag groceries or take orders at McDick's?

Have you not seen all the automated checkouts?
Have you not seen automated food ordering?
Nobody wants to pay you retards that much to do jobs that a chimp could do.
>>
>>769181748
>they already automate these things
>and about 50% of this country already makes less than $15/hr

How bad at logic are you guys? The price of automation will continue to go down no matter what we pay employees. But NOT paying employees well kills economies over time.
>>
>>769181442
>But everyone is making DOUBLE the money, spending more, and creating a better economy.

Yea I Spend less because it is now no longer worth the price. Gas station wants $1.89 for a chocolate bar. Would rather burn the money then give in to their jew shit. I also stopped going to my local butcher entirely. In fact a lot of people have and coincidentally he is going out of business.
>>
>>769181879
>But NOT paying employees well kills economies over time
you really are that entitled, aren't you?

Businesses will continue to replace menial jobs with automation. It will not stop. You can cry and whine that you deserve a million dollars per hour all you want. If you want more money per hour, get educated and earn more. Nobody owes you a living just because you were born. Kill yourself if you don't like the way things are

This is the way they are and you crying about it won't change anything.

I think it should.

>in the 60's, 70's and early 80's the minimum wage had the buying power of about $30 an hour give or take
>the generation before us was able to make a great living jumping right into the workforce or by going to college
>if they chose college they could pay off the tuition with their summer jobs and be guaranteed a job after graduation with almost no debt, assuming they worked the summers
>if they chose the workforce well congratulations you're making $30 an hour working at the local car wash. you can afford to take a loan out to buy a house or car
>the government refused to adjust the minimum wage for inflation in the 80's,90's and 00's
>we're now stuck because the government didn't do their job and adjust for inflation over the years
>the second we raise the minimum wage small businesses WILL go out of business but then again, people can't live on this small of a wage

Either the generations before us had it way too good or this generation is getting seriously fucked in the ass. I don't know the solution but it's completely unfair that someone could work 40 hours a week and not be able to even afford a basic studio apartment and food.
>>
>>769182084
LOL I own an auto shop. I'm not entitled to anything. But I also pay my employees a living wage. Because I'm not a greedy jew. You don't have to be poor to understand basic economics, faggot.
>>
>>769181879
Economies, not individual businesses in the short term, which is all that businesses care about
>>
>>769180994
no, people who can't survive the way things are should be eliminated from the gene pool
>>
>>769181442
If min wage is $15 then the Fed would be forced to jack up interest rates to try to control inflation.

Now everyone's variable loans goes up.
New housing purchases slow
Bonds are now more attractive than equities.
Stock market goes down
Capital dries up
Layoffs
Unemployment
Liberal Wet Dream
>>

>>
What about people who worked their asses off to get up to making $15 dollars an hour?

You think you deserve that money right off the getgo?

>millenials say they aren't entitled
>>
>>769182201
That''s because you employee SKILLED labor.
>>
>>769181879
it kills poor people, which is good
>>
>>769182427
also, pretty much this.

stop having kids if you want the cost of living to go down.
the number of people competing for the same space and resources drives up the value and eventual cost of said space/resources.
>>
>>769182337
>assumptions
This is not true at all. That is all speculation. Again, it's why we don't make $1/hr anymore. And EVERY TIME after a minimum wage increase our economy goes gangbusters. Our production output says that we should be making about $17/hr minimum wage. Greedy jew owners are just fucking you.
>>
>>769182430
The people who were already making more than minimum wage should have their wages increased by the same amount
>>
>>769182427
.....You would leverage the increase to demand more money. Idiot.
>>
>>769182084
They can fire employees and automate all they want, but at the end of the day, it's people with money in their pockets that buys their products and keeps the company going. Without that it's all over.
>>
>>769182430
>we should continue to get fucked by business because I got fucked by business
LOL nice logic.
>>
>>769180994
No. for sure no.
>A jump that big will mean businesses have to pay out more too employees
>This means companies will hire less people
>The sudden influx of money will cause inflation to peak at 12%
>This will force business to purse further mechanization of labor. You can already run a mcdonalds with 2 employees (they do in China)
>All of this leads to inflation, and WAY higher unemployment. Maybe even upwards of 15%
>>
>>769182526
>should
typical libtard point of view. even if you aren't one.

Should doesn't mean shit. Companies aren't going to willingly raise EVERYONE'S fucking wages. If the are legally required to raise the minimum, then they will.

Yeah, you'd HOPE that an employer would be decent enough to do so. But decency has no place in a capitalist society.
This world doesn't run on hopes and dreams, babe.
That ain't how the real world works.
>>
>>769182483
I employee office guys and part runners. Literally not skilled in any way. They all make a decent living. No one makes under $14/hr.

sounds like I'd have to do something. no thanks, I like things the way they are
>>
>>769182594
True enough, but the system will last about 20-50 years under full automation before it really crumbles.

Shit, as a country, the U.S. has been giving loans on money they don't actually have. This has gone on for YEARS. We're still chugging along, ain't we? Granted, the average price of a house in california is 1.6 million, but you'll totally be able to afford that with your $15/hour wage, right sweetums?
>>
>>769180994
Id say make minimum $10 so its enough to survive, but still not enough to comfortably live on so people feel urged to compete for the higher paying jobs still
>>
Rather than increasing wages, we should reduce the costs of living. Real estate moguls should get the wall.
>>
>>769182820
Set it to state level decision. Make states compete, and make wages comparable to where you live. NY minimum wage should not be the same as Louisiana.
>>
>>769182698
Depends on where your made-up shop is located. If you're pretending that your shop is in like fuckin Nebraska, then maybe that's a fair wage. If that was an auto shop in Seattle, $14/hour wouldn't do jack shit.

They're already doing that, and the results aren't good.

>small-ish city
>relatively low crime/cost of living
>word gets out it's cheap to live in ______

>cost of living goes up
>now the place you moved to has been shitted up just like the place you moved FROM

You're from california, aren't you?
>>
>>769182769
That actually supports my statement
Wages are one of the last things to rise during strong economies.
Feds raise rates, in part, to cool off out of control inflation.
A jump to 15 an hour would spark inflation.

Not going to spoon feed you but here's an article to help you with basic economics as it relates to my posts:

feel free to ask about anything in that article you don't understand

>>
>>769182769
When min wage is increased we see a small bump that is true.

However it is because it is increased in small amounts. If you tell walmart they need to increase their pay by 50-100% they will be in deep shit. So naturally they will hire less employees than before and mechanize more aspects of the business. For instance getting rid of cashiers and going totally automated. This will only increase unemployment.
>>
>>769182982
This may be the dumbest thing I have ever read. Just because it's a capitalist country literally does not mean business' can not fuck you. Walmart comes to your town with government backing, literally gets tax free land and buildings, they kick out every other grocer due to their unfair advantage, you are literally forced to take whatever they offer you. You can't eat principals faggot.

And they WOULD be under obligation if minimum wages were raised, literally the entire point.

The work is the same, it's the outcome that's different you god damn moron.

DUHHHHHHHHHHHH. Also, I live in a state with top notch cost of living to wages and we soak up all the Cali faggots. If Cali paid better compared to their COL my state wouldn't have to babysit them.
>>
>>769183404
No, you literally believe that you shouldn't have to WORK your way up the ladder.

You honestly just said you expect employers to HAND you a fat hourly wage right when you walk in the door; even when there's employees that have worked there for years to get to that same wage.
Dumb faggot.
>>
Yes it should be raised.
>>
>>769180994
My issue is the cost of everything going up. I don't give a fuck about you, or your inability to work a salaried job that converts to $44/hr, what I do care about is the cost of EVERYTHING going up with absolutely no benefit to myself. Your getting paid $15 an hour raises the cost of everything, and I'm not going to see a single benefit financially. I'm not going to get a cost of living increase to compensate, so Fuck you.
>>
>>769180994
Fuck no, I lived fine on minimum wage because I didn't have 6 nigger kids nor did I buy shit I couldn't afford. I had a shit apartment a flip phone no tv or internet and bought used books and dvds off amazon for entertainment. People act like they're stuck at minimum wage. Its called busting ass networking and leveraging your experience into better jobs. Worked for me I dont have a degree and I own a home now.

I've never known a single person who had half a brain and wasn't afraid of honest hard work that couldn't find a good job. Lazy fucking liberals want everything done for them. Safe spaces, legal pot, free healthcare, universal income (or whatever the fuck its called. They're the reason why in a couple of generations we're going to be riding around on wall-e scooters.

If you cant find anything better than a minimum wage job then thats because you lack gumption and integrity and a pair of fucking balls
>>
>>769180994
Minimum wage assumes that a distant government knows the value of a local dollar and can micromanage it as such.
>>
>>769183267
You are so stupid. EVERY TIME WE INCREASE MI MUM WAGE IT BOLSTERS THE ECONOMY. Go fucking read and stop looking at it backwards. I'm not saying strong economies make good wages, I said good wages make strong economies. Eat a bullet moron.

And no one said make it $15/hr over night, stupid.
>>
>>769183538
californians are a fucking disease

don't hire them
don't be friends with them
don't even talk to them
>>
>>769183357
And why should they have too?
>If you are a doctor you make a lot. This is because you have a set of skills that is rare, hard to obtain, and valuable. So you make more money
>If you are a cashier you do not make much money. This is because your skills are not hard to obtain, extremely common, and do not produce much value. So you make less

This is how economics work.

If you force walmart to nearly double their personnel cost (which is already their biggest expense) they will let go of as much staff as possible and seek to mechanize. We could expect no more cashiers and only automated systems. It would greatly hurt the economy
>>
>>769180994
There should be no minimum wage; we need laissez faire economics.

I think they should pay you related to cost of living on the low end. JUST HOW YOU WERE YEARS AGO. You got the advantage of better purchasing power, they should be forced to keep pace. Your starting point $ was the same as kids today, which is retarded. How dumb are you? You also do realize not everyone can be a manager right? The higher you go the less positions. BUT, the lower and middle class literally drive the economy with spending. Almost 100%. So maybe them having more money to blow on stupid shit it better than killing our own country because of your pride and stupidity.
>>
>>769183737
notice how EVERY grocery store now has at least 4 automated checkout stands?

Yeah...there's a reason for that. It's because those machines don't bitch about their wages every year. Anyone who thinks automation isn't going to replace every menial low-level job within 50 years is just dicking themselves in the throat.
>>
>>769183642
>And no one said make it $15/hr over night, stupid.
That is literally OPs question.

It's obvious you are not very smart or high on drugs/alcohol. Economics isn't your strength at the moment.
>>
>>769183866
exactly, menial tasks are on the way out as robotics and AI advance.
The idiots in those jobs demanding more money are only hastening their own demise.
>>
>>769180994
I've been on the job market for the last year. I'm a mechanical engineer with 19 years experience. Got laid off with most the company due to the owner realizing business was dropping too fast to keep us all working (was fine 2 years ago, and doing well since 2010).
Was earning $32/hour plus benefits.
Sent resume to 40+ companies, have 4 replies, one offering $25/hour, 3 others offering around $10/hour.
I replied by mail by handmaking pop-up cards featuring the poop emoji.
Since 1998, I've spent 7 years at Boeing (shit place to work at), 5 smaller manufacturers, and been head of engineering departments twice.
The economy and work climate is in terrible shape, but making a federal minimum wage (for entry level, part time, kiddie jobs) more than $10/hour is ridiculous and would collapse the already tough job market. A job market that can't employ an educated, experienced, aerospace engineer at a living wage.
>>
>>769183666
They should have to because I'm being forced to compete against literal illegal and slave labor keeping ALL wages down. From menial labor, to skilled manual labor, to tech, to medicine. So tell you what, you can fuck off minimum wage when you secure the borders OR allow me to work wherever the fuck I want. You can't literally rig the system on one hand then pretend we live in a capitalist utopia world on the other.

And if walmart can't handle the pay raise, then they deserve to fucking die off.
>>
>>769183737
Depends on the state. But yeah King Soopers (local grocery chain) is unionized. And that is why walmart is more affordable to shop at and that's why they hire more people.

But the other guys is right. They will just automate the whole thing.

>>769180994
no. That's too much in some areas and not enough in others. Where I live 15 an hour is unheard of for unskilled labor. Of course rent where I live is on average 688 for a one bedroom apt. and it is not difficult to find a crappy apt for 500 a month. There is no need for a 15 per hour minimum wage where I live, although 10 I think might be reasonable.

No. Inflation would occur because if everyone gets 15 for a mediocre job, prices of homes, cars, etc will also rise because they will just take more money. If a dollar were worth 2 dollars, the price of everything would also double. It's basic economics

>>769180994

I'd rather there be a UBI and basic catastrophic healthcare, with health ed so people are more likely to seek medical care and all that.

But really, none of it matters until we stop treating money like a god and treat it like a tool. Like, you know, stop letting large corporations make decisions to benefit their shareholders regardless of what it does to everyone else.

Did you ever think that the job market is only tough because you are being picky? 25 an hour is a pay cut, but its better than 0 (especially for a whole year). Also If the minimum wage was increased, companies would be paying more to stay competative. Why work at a high stress job making 15 an hour when you could work at a entry level low stress job making the same amount. i make 16.40 an hour now, but i would quit in a heartbeat if I could find something easy for 15 an hour.

They won't. They will automate the whole system and let go of half of their employees
>>
>>769184279
I GUARANTEE I'm doing better than 99% of 4chan. And that's not how it works because of government interference, but please, literally keep ignoring their role in the side that protects business while you scream "MUHHH FREEE MARKEYTT!!!". Ohhhh, and walmart has been losing it's position for years, because automating and treating employees like shit has negative consequences in the real world. Well in the USA anyways, their overseas work is keeping them afloat because they haven't had a chance to ruin those local economies yet.

b-b-b-b-b-but I FEEL like I deserve more money!
Don't my feelings matter in the real world!?

A CEO's annual salary couldn't sustain a wage increase of 10 cents company wide for a day in these massive companies.

lol lower it

Absolutely yes

This never happens, workforce remains the same, and the wages increase. In the US, Wages have not kept up with the economy, in corporations have pocketed the difference.

>this generation is getting seriously fucked in the ass
Don't forget we get blamed for everything too, like luxury vacation resorts going bankrupt because "millennials are too frugal", or restaurant chains failing. The problem is people not adapting to what millenials want, which is to not be ripped the fuck off consistently, or at least make us feel like we are giving some of the proceeds for a cause.

So there hasn't been inflation since you started working.......

Your chart reflects the impact of technology on business models.

You don't deserve to make more money because of software upgrades sport.
>>
>>769184562
If you think walmart has not already automated everything they could, you are a niave idiot. They will automate more in time, but technology hasnt reached that point.

>I GUARANTEE I'm doing better than 99% of 4chan
Ya but everyone here is a faggot loser. That's like saying your more intelligent than 99% of the special ed class

>MUHHH FREEE MARKEYTT!!!
Yes I do. See today in the US the bottom 10% live better than middle 50% in 1960. The bottom 10% here live better than the top 20% in Asia, Africa, South America, ect... Illiteracy has declined, starvation is nearly gone (we have fat person problem not skinny person problem), access to needs/wants is greater than ever before. Capitalism has worked really well.

>Ohhhh, and walmart has been losing it's position for years, because automating and treating employees like shit has negative consequences in the real world
Again you prove that you have no understanding of economics. Walmart's position is being lost BECAUSE of Amazon and the rise of internet shopping. Has literally nothing to do with their employees who they treat fine. They also hire 1.5 million people. That's 1.5 million people who have no marketable skills....

Yes, thats obviously what happened, because we had an abundance of computer automation in 1975...
>>
>>769180994
Just raise it a little. If you raise it fast everything will go up. If people know others have more money they just charge more for their goods like how big pharma does it. Just get better jobs.
>>
>>769184931
Because they lack intensive to do so right now. If we increase their biggest expense by 50% they will dump billions into automation technology.
>>
>>769184648
actually yes, yes it could. Walmart employs 1.4 million people in the US. A 10 cent increase in all employees wage, assuming an 8 hour work day, amounts to 1.1 million dollars per day. Walmart's CEO's salary is 1.3 million in direct pay. If you include his bonus (4.7 million), stock, and all other forms of compensation, the CEO received 22.1 million last year.
>>
>>769185001
And yet we are at the END of that productivity/well paid employee symbiosis that brought us here. Jesus man, see the forest through the trees. Look at CEO pay to worker pay. Look at pay for production. Look at the amount of illegal labor. Look at inflation to wages. We are on the DECLINE because it's NOT a capitalist economy anymore. Jesus man, you literally can't see the big picture.

>1.5 million people have no marketable skills
Literally talking right out of your asshole. Over 50% of Walmart employees have college degrees. And that's from Wal Mart themselves. And spoiler, we would likely have MORE people employed with smaller grocers that aren't propped up by government.

>>769181748
Way to cherry pick, faggot. What about min wage jobs that actually require thinking. I used to work as a Donation Attendant for Goodwill. I had several responsibilities. A robot could never do my job unless you're taking about a sentient bipedal droid.

I started working in 2009 at $7.25/hr.
Today I can go out to any food joint and start at $12.50.
Yet from an inflation perspective $7.25 in 2009bux is equal to $8.57 in 2018bux.
What happened to wages? Did wages go up too rapidly?
Oh no no no. Compare goods prices in 2009 to goods prices in 2018.
In 2009 a 2x4 was ~$1.20 Today? ~$2.80
A McDouble was $0.99. Today? ~$1.70
12pack of soda was $2.99. Today? $3.99

A $15/hr minimum wage in my area at least, wouldn't be obscene like some people think.
But we should really be addressing the declining buying power of the dollar radically independent of inflation.
Because if we have inflated only 18%, but prices have gone up 60-200% across the board, that means that wealth is shifting, and shifting massively. Is it shifting within our countries? Or is it being exported? Where is it all going? We don't want to turn into Canada.

>Literally talking right out of your asshole. Over 50% of Walmart employees have college degrees.
Alright lets assume that's true. Why are they working at walmart? Could they have a shit degree like dance theory or maybe walmart pays more than they would make with their degree.

>And spoiler, we would likely have MORE people employed with smaller grocers that aren't propped up by government.
Sure I am a libertarian so I agree 100% that the government should prop up NO ONE

>Look at CEO pay to worker pay
Yes a CEO makes more and should make more. They work 80 hours a week, spent years of the lives competing for the position, and run a massive company. A general is more important than a grunt.

>Look at inflation to wages. We are on the DECLINE because it's NOT a capitalist economy anymore
Look at the access to resources. How even the poor have computers, cell phones, and cars. The poor ARE getting richer this is proven.

Nice "other compensation".
Okay so he could take home $0 and raise everyone's salary $0.10/hr for 20 something work days. super cool.
So he could give everyone an additional ~$20/year if he took no salary.
That'll be life changing won't it? A little far from the proposed $16,000 a year raise you want to give them.

If you read the entire post you would see how I mention my bubble and how buying power and inflation are dangerously out of sync and how that can have catastrophic effects on our nation.
But okay dude.
