I nearly died once. I was just a kid and went to run across a duel carriageway without looking. I have no fucking idea why, as soon as leapt forward to run my best friend yanked me back and a white van sped past just inches from me blasting its horn. I remember seeing a sudden white blur in my face, and feeling the wind from the van. I nearly shit my pants. I've always had a lot of respect for roads since then.

* In The middle of The night, trapped between cops and drugdealers in a place known as Gaza Strip... I did walked 4 kilometers to escape
* Lived shortly on a "favela" dominated by narcos... My house had a wall that if i'd painted in Yellow would be called swiss cheese
* One night, comming home from work, î was waiting for my wife to open owr home's gate when i felt something hard on my head... A random bandit though that i was a cop... Hey treaten my life while for pure luck some doccuments on my pocket showed up to him that i had nothing to do with cop... Î was IT guy...

Yeah. Most of the time it was just dickhead republicans taking pot shots at the station suard boxes when you were on guard duty but occasionally it was when out and about in the vans. Everything from handgun fire up to armalites blasting away. The vans were, and still are, tough as fuck though.

Yes. I didn't manage to kill him but it was enough to make his arrest managable. I'm no longer working with the police (PSNI now) but I still carry a handgun for self defence in case and its still a habit to check under the car before using it.

I've nearly swerved off a highway bridge trying to avoid an accident
I've done surveying in Florida swamps, quite a few times I encountered (in order of least to most scary) moccasins, black bears, gators, wild hogs, and baby gators. Thankfully, aside from killing the snakes with my machete, I never had to actually deal with a situation with the others (you learn to avoid them instead).

All vets of that era were shunned . spit at, avoided, called baby killers, drug additcs, no parades, no regognition for our service for years. We came home in ones and twos, took the uniform off, stuck it the duffel. bag shoved it in the attic. Some of the friends we had when we left didn't want to know us when we came home.
