If your only two options are the Army or Marines I'd say the Army. I've heard good things about the National Guard but before you join any of these branches make sure to do your research. I'm not sure if your the kind of person who wants to do as little work as possible or not. If you join make sure you are prepared for boot camp. I've heard some hilarious stories from my father from his time as a DS and some of the trainees are absolutely retarded. Try to not look like an autist and you should be fine.

As I recall, the Marines don't guarantee you a specific job before you ship to Boot Camp, whereas the Army will guarantee you your MOS...
So, even if you're a perfect fit for the job you want, you might not get the job you want... Thus, you'll be one of those faggot POG Marines who scream "Combat Marine first, Cook second, Oorah debbuh dawwwg!", but never do anything cooler than flipping fucking burgers.... And at that point, McDonald's is usually hiring for a whole lot more than the USMC will pay you...
Whereas in the Army, you can tell your recruiters you want a certain job (Infantry, or Cook, or truck driver, or aircraft mechanic), and they can get it in your contract... If your heart is absolutely dead-set on being an 88m (truck driver), and they say they can get you a "similar" position, you can still tell them to stuff it up their ass and not sign until they have an opening or get you into DEP (Delayed Entry Program, where you ship to Basic a few months later; they do it for Infantry all the time because Infantry)...
Better yet, if you go Infantry or Combat Engineer (go Infantry, fuck castle-wearing POGs), you can also specifically request an Airborne/Ranger school or Sapper school (for Engies) in your contract, meaning you will most definitely go to Abn/Ranger/Sapper school after Basic... I don't believe it works the same for Sniper school, though; pretty sure your unit has to select their top marksmen for any Sniper school openings...
If you want a totally biased and tainted opinion:
Go Army; it's the better fighting force, because the Marines are always and forever less-funded, less-equipped, less-informed, and less-survivable... They tend to do a LOT of meat-shield missions... Plus, in the Army Infantry, you get to experience ALL the Infantry positions; rifle, grenades, MG's, mounted, dismounted, possibly Airborne, SF if you're good enough, etc... The Marines are specialized, and that specialization has been their downfall a few times...

Marsoc replaces force recon. Recon still exists at battalion levels. You'll need to be in a few years before considering Marsoc and if you do you'd better be a pt stud or you'll never make it. Start in recon (if you make it) and go from there. If you don't make it into recon don't even worry about Marsoc.

The U.S. military currently fights for the interests of corporate CEOs and other rich morons. All you would be doing is shooting brown people for their oil or - and sweet Jesus I hope this doesn't happen - your own countrymen. Join a militia or try and get involved at a political level. Our enemy comes from within the country itself, not outside of our borders.
Both are practically the same thing. Marine training is slightly more difficult when it comes to muscular training, but endurance is equal.
