There's a far lower barrier to entry with much broader potential for murder.

The “NRA” has become the boogeyman for all things gun-related in the political world.
The basic fact remains that even if this organization didn’t exist, we’d see stricter laws for legal weapons, yet we still have no improvement to deal with illegal/black market sales.
I think the real long term solution has multiple facets, from having armed security on all campuses, to stricter regulations on purchases, to mental health standards, and media changes that stop sensationalizing all of the violence. If the shooters’ images/stories weren’t allowed to be televised then suddenly a lot of the appeal for such a stunt would evaporate.
