Honestly there is a simple solution to this gun control debate. Wouldn't it be nice to not have to ban guns and not blacklist thousands of innocent law abiding citizens and rob them of their 2nd Amendment rights, and also not have to worry about kids getting shot at? The solution is pretty simple and all you need to do is get Democrats and Republicans to agree with one another and work together!
If we took Obama's ideas and mixed them with Trump's ideas we could come up with a very good solution. For example, instead of banning AR-15s what we should do is make it to where kids don't have access to guns. I think we should keep our guns locked up, but I think the gun owner should be allowed to place their gun safes anywhere they want in their house. That way if an intruder breaks into your house you can still get to your gun quickly and you will never have to worry about your kids getting into your guns unsupervised. Locking up our guns alone would greatly reduce school shootings and you won't have to ban any guns!
I agree with Trump when he says that not all mentally ill people are dangerous and just because someone is mentally ill doesn't mean that they are going to go on a killing spree once they get their hands on a gun. Instead of robbing the mentally ill of their 2nd Amendment rights we could require all mentally ill and people that have been adjudicated as mentally defective to take a test. If they can pass the test and prove that they are stable and not a threat to others or themselves then they can purchase a firearm.
If Democrats and Republicans work together and cooperate with one another we can solve the damn problem! If Democrats and Republicans keep fighting each other on this issue then we are stuck with two terrible choices. Either we do nothing about school shootings or attack the 2nd Amendment. If we work together we can keep our guns and protect our children without turning our schools into prisons.

Agreed. Mass shootings are all about he shock of the crime and the mass hysteria. Several times as many teenagers die in car accidents every single day, drug overdoses, etc. It's a drop in the bucket of our actual problems.
As far as homogeneous societies go, I have heard of the sense of identity argument and agree with it. But tending to the mentally ill is more of a small town thing. When everyone knows each other, they can lift up the people who aren't doing well. Counteracting that however are people like me who are moving every couple of years. Identity-wise I fit right in. However as far as social safety net goes, I don't have a single person in my city outside of work that I know. Thus if I start to slip away, then only a handful of coworkers might notice, but even the city is large enough (100k) that there's no mutual people to help.
I think society's increased mobility has created more of an every man for himself type of system. That combined with the lack of direction many youth have nowadays. A sizeable portion of the mass shootings seem to be committed by late highschool/ college aged people. The world is a lot bigger than it used to be and for some they feel left behind with no one guiding them forward. They lash out at those they feel are moving ahead at the expense of tthem. It's a lot easier to fail in life now because few people are willing to provide that emotional support. Sure we have welfare and other shit but then you just end up with welfare queens who don't want to make any big steps in life.
