Not him, but I'd say that purpose and occupancy are the difference. Castles serve a political, as well as military, purpose. Castles house a lord (or some other such nobility), and as such, it's a residence that has been fortified. A fort(ress), serves a purely military purpose. It only houses soldiers and officers. They're both similar in the fact that they are fortified and that they usually exert a zone of control around them.

For the view?
Because a smaller footprint means fewer means of ingress?
So they could put a water tank in the upper floor and have running water even when the electricity is out?

Eh. It's a matter of semantics.
All castles are palaces. Not all palaces are castles.
Versailles, a palace, wouldn't necessarily be considered a castle.
>>
>>769047566
That must be why modern military forces the world over continue to use castle designs for defensive posture.

The corners, notice how most are concane rounded walls that come to a point? That means people at the points can easily see/shoot along the entire length of both sides.
It's actually a huge tactical advantage to pool your archers/crossbowman at those corners.
>>
>>769060439
wat?
>>
>>769061653
>archers/crossbowman
not guns?

some of these are clearly in use well into modern times
>>
>>769061170
It leaves your attacking enemy with a bad choice, of either doing all the work of attacking a mostly useless point, getting up over the points wall only to find yourself still out of the fort, and facing a horrible situation of being bottlenecked by the shape of it before you can get in from there, and as you're getting bottlenecked the amassed centralized forces have a much easier time dealing with killing your guys off a few at a time, OR, attacking the more ideal Main wall, but to do so, means you're passing a pair of points extending behind you, making that main wall essentially just bait, allowing the defensive army to encircle and surround your offensive force with abouvt 270degrees of firing exposure to you.

Your best bet at that point is to invent the airplane and just bomb the ever loving shit out of the place.
>>
>>769061815
Well, guns too.
most of these were originally constructed in the age of archery.
But, I suppose to advantage works for guns aswell.

A bastion fort, a type of trace Italienne (literally, Italian outline), is a fortification in a style that evolved during the early modern period of gunpowder when the cannon came to dominate the battlefield.

They had forts too.

Most were bulldozed in the great 1800s land redistribution. Big pyramids and walls aren't useful when you're trying to farm on someone's sacred land lol

This is located at the eastern Danish strait, on the other side of the strait was another castle, and both forts were able to shoot half way across the strait.

Nope, it's only a palace if the primary role of the castle is as house for the lord, and that usually means that it has been severely altered to make it pleasant to live in.

The biggest regret of the Civil War, is that after the North raped the South, we didn't finish the job.

Now we're left with a retard south full of inbred white welfare retards that live in trailers, with broken down trucks on their "lawns".

The north should have burned them all alive. To this day the south hates America.

What that was crazy with those structure was the ressouces involved.

To siege a bastion you need to raise an army at least 20k to 30k men. And be able to provide those soldier with food and water for about 3 month. More than three month an you loose the siege.

more truthfully, that looks like a relatively classic design of lookout tower. Built in an already high place, given a little more elevation and windows all around to see where the forest fire is. Originally there would have been a special aiming device in the center of the upstairs room to triangulate onto locations.
