Ask a farm fag anything
Currently at work so may not answer right away
>>
Hows fucking pigs all day and chewing on hay?
>>
Farmhand? Like tractor driving, cattle herding, chicken chasing farmhand?

You taking salary or percentage?
>>
How’s Trump looking to y’all these days?
>>
>>769037456
What's it like to be the inbred, backwards redneck anchor that's dragging this country to hell?
>>
>>769037586
No animals, just crop, but I’d imagine it wouldn’t be all that terrible.
>>769037587
My family farms, and I rent land too. I do a lot of everything but mostly driving/fixing machinery. No animals. This summer I have a job at the local towns agronomy center so I’ve been mostly loading trucks, sweeping, moving pallettes, shit like that. I take percentage of my rented land as I rent it with my brothers, and a salary at my job.
>>
>>769037456
Who the fuck starts a thread when theyre not gonna be able to participate? Fuckin newfag
>>
>>769037854
Right on. Good luck.
>>
>>769037650
Most everybody loved him up here, I don’t really care either way.
>>769037783
North Dakota isn’t too redneck, but there are definitely inbeds in this small town.
>>
>>769037933
Stfu man I’m trying, we aren’t busy 80% of the day so it’s fine
>>
>>769037456
Im a production manager at a foundation seed company. You guys growing barley?
>>
>>769038426
Up here it’s been a ton of wheat and soybeans. At least on our farm, that is.
>>
>>769037456
are mexicans good workers?
>>
>>769038513
What wheat varieties you growing? I'm assuming pioneer something or other, ha!
>>
Anyway to start working in farming without being fucking born into it? I don't wanna sit in my cubicle anymore all week long.
>>
can you take pic of animal?
>>
>>769038536
Back a few years ago when the oil biz was booming there were tons of illegals who didn’t speak a luck of English. Was really strange seeing all the way up here by the Northern border.
>>769038620
Yeah, not too many people diverging from what works, lots of small dying farms not willing to risk their yield on weather changes, and only a few bigger farms who understand crop and variety diversity. I’m not an expert myself, so I’m not completely knowledgeable about how everything goes around here, but I have a vague idea.
>>
>>769038679
Foundation seed fag here. Ha! Just show up. Don't expect to get rich right away. Large scale farming is very hard to get into and hold on to in one generation. You have to be very tight on keeping costs down while making sure you move product as soon as you can get it off the field. If you keep it small and organic it's easier. Make sure you grow/raise more than one product. Carry crop insurance if you're going organic.
>>
>>769038679
Well, you’d need a shit load of money to start up from scratch. So if you have a spare mil laying around, go ahead and be a farmer.
>>769038811
Sorry man, at my job in town so not many animals in my line of sight right now.
>>
Why do you need money from the government to keep producing?
>>
>>769039003
>not many animals in my line of sight right now
booooo
>>
>>769038860
I don't know much about the Dakotas as far as how you grow. Are you guys growing hard red?

I'm in Michigan and we typically grow red in the south, white in the north and nearly no hard. We have quite a few trying to break into the malting barley business but they're idiots. Humid, unpredictable climate means low yields and high vom levels. Malting barley is shit here.
>>
>>769039031
Not many people up here do that, other than some oldfags who can hardly drive their machinery. But in general a farmer’s income is based off of markets they can’t control. Say there’s a huge wheat yield in South America, and you also planted mostly wheat up here, you’re gonna make a lot less of a profit than you would if you diversified. It’s a lot about knowledge of worldwide markets and shit like that.
>>
>>769039031
Learn how SNAP works and you'll understand.
>>
>>769039125
Main crops are wheat, canola, barley and sunflowers. We do corn and soybeans some years too. There are big corporation farms that have root veggies but usually actual farms don’t go that way.
>>
>>769039260
I agree. People assume every farmer is some backwoods, inbred, "wrong turn" type. Most of the ones I know are successful and very well educated in business. But they can also toss hay bales all day and are typically pillars in their community. The organic guys are very...out there.
>>
>>769039497
I think it depends on the size of your community too. I go to NDSU and even that town has a lot of Ag shit going on and it seems very upstanding and good natured, but back in these small towns a lot of ass backwards people are still around trying to survive and mostly failing.
>>
>>769039260
I see, but why wheat? There are better commodities to be planted. It's like you guys just kept bashing your head against the wall until you can go through.
>>
>>769039716
Was mostly just an example, but wheat is a good crop to use in your yearly crop rotation. Some crops really drain the soil of nutrients and stuff like that so you need a year or two of some other plant to give the soil time to “refresh”, and wheat is a good crop for that. You could grow wheat in a desert if you really tried.
>>
>>769039839
Oh wow.

How's the weed market?
>>
>>769039397
We have a few breeders on staff. Some are world renowned. We have patented wheat, dry beans, barley, oats and own some soy genetics. We also clean custom jobs. Clover, niche dry beans, nattos, buckwheat.

You guys every try popcorn? I bet you'd kill that market up there if you could get a certified organic field and get a decent yield.
>>
>>769039933
>organic corn

Mah boi. That's impossible.
>>
>>769039915
We actually just had two medical marijuana shops declare their opening in the state, so it’ll probably be kicking off here in the next year or so. It’ll be fun to watch that’s for sure!
>>769039933
Maybe in more heavily populated areas, where you could easily sell and deliver to big companies, but where I’m from and the surrounding areas it’s just not feasible to create the space for the growing and then have to find a way to deliver to whomever would take it. Maybe though, I’m not to read up on my popcorn growing. We do grown sweet corn some years just for personal use!
>>
>>769039839
I've got a guy growing specialty malting barley in an old driveway he turned up trying to keep his protein down. It's growing.

Most of our farmers are small town guys. Usually in the 1-2k acre size. They are the glue that holds some of those towns together. It amazes me how they move their products sometimes. In this day and age they rely heavily on their reputation and word of mouth and some of these guys are selling their rejects from Michigan for feed in Kentucky all on "I know a guy". It's insane.
>>
>>769040033
We have a guy that grew organic popcorn for Orville Redenbacher before organics were a thing. It's certified. Not all crops are conventional/genetically altered.

Look at the Amish. We're studying the heirloom genetics of some of their crops to incorporate some of their traits into new strains.
>>
>>769040302
Yeah it’s all about connections. These last few years loads of people are retiring and renting out their land, so we’ve gotten up to maybe 4-5k acres of land to work up. Sometimes I wonder how it all gets done with just 1 seeder.
>>
>>769037456
Why do you poison our food with gmo's?
>>
>>769040726
For fun :)
>>
>>769040726
Why are you so stupid ? Im not op but your question is so fuckin sad, wake up faglord
>>
>>769040599
That's a big ass seeder or a long and fast paced haul. How many hands do you have on deck? Also, what are you studying? I'm guessing agribusiness.
>>
>>769040726
What foods are you eating that are GMO? Also, how are they poisoning you?
>>
>>769040831
Yeah, it’s pretty much constantly running. Right now my dad has 3 hired hands though, 2 oldfags and the other is my college roomie so lots of help for seeding. Yeah it’s mostly just general Ag, but Ag Econ and business are what it’s gonna be, I’d rather be just farming and playing WoW or something but a degree is important.
>>
>>769041202
Any siblings? Plans to take over the farm in the future?
>>
>>769041309
One brother one step brother, we rent land together, but mostly just because none of us have much money of our own. I’m eldest boi so I’ll be getting the farm.
>>
>>769041471
Cool. How's the overhead? I'm assuming sustainable since you plan on inheriting.
>>
>>769037783
Jesus dude, you know OP and his people are the root of your comforts right? Without farmers like him we don't have convenient food supplies that allow your afternoon Xbox time
>>
>>769041702
Yeah, we’re one of the bigger farms in our area. Definitely sustainable, plus it’s what I like doing so pretty win-win.
>>
>>769037854
Why do you rent instead of own the land? Who do you rent from?
>>
How many farmers daughter's you fuck?
>>
>>769041861
Perfect. Wish you the best, man! I wasn't born into it but kinda fell into this position. It paid for my house and renovations. Sold it. Bought 20 acres in the country and started homesteading. Goats and chickens. Garden for the family and farmers market. Retiring at 40 to live off our land and my hobbies. Ag has changed my life and I can't recommend it enough. Thanks for busting your ass so we can all eat bread for cheap.
>>
>>769042145
Probably all of them if he's on the biggest farm in the area.
>>
>>769037783
OP didn't say he was in the US Military.
>>
>>769042229
I love farm girls they are so down to earth, organic and looking to get fucked hard
>>
>>769041940
Mostly old people grasping on to their land not wanting to sell it, and that we already own most of the land around us so the only way to expand is renting from people.
>>769042145
>>769042229
Sadly none, I’m a wannabe neet and was an uncle till I left for college.
>>769042164
Thanks man, that’s the dream anyway!
>>
>>769042424
Until* not uncle till.

Now I wish I would have had the nerve to be with the ginger farmers daughter
>>
>>769037944
Bro, I'm born and raised in Bismarck

Where are you??
>>
>>769043480
Bottineau, bout an hour Northeast if Minot. I lived in Bismarck for a few years back in middle school.
>>
>>769043586
I built a plant that sells you natural gas near estevan saskatchewan
>>
>>769043662
Slick dicks! I don’t head up to Canada as much as I should, only 20 so cant drink in the states yet
>>
>>769043586

No kidding, small world.
What middle school did.you go to?
My cousin went to Bottineau for college, my uncle is a retired farmer outside of Douglas, a small town west of Max , and South of Minot.
>>
>>769043887
>>769043887
Canada is tits bro.
>>
>>769037456

do you want to jump into that truck after it's been filled?
>>
>>769043977
I think it was Horizon? North side of Bis, was only there for a year and a half though so it’s fuzzy. Bottineau College is alright, but I went straight to NDSU.
>>
>>769044131
If it’s already full nothing much would happen if I jumped in. If I REALLY wanted to die I’d stand in it while it’s being filled, ez quicksand
>>
>>769044235
Or while it’s being emptied, then I’d be sucked through a hole into an auger! Even better.
>>
>>769044155
Man, this is awesome.
I've been a /b/tard for almost 10 years , and I've only came across like 3 people from ND.

Pretty neat considering this is a world wide site.
>>
>>769044532
I’ve only been lurking for a year, this is the first thread I’ve made. It’s cool that it actually got to 1st page for a bit! Appreciate it /b/oys
>>
>>769044235
i saw a documentary called ducktales and in that a guy named scrooge mcduck jumps into a big pile of gold like a swimming pool. wouldn't it be even better in that truck?
>>
>>769044751
What are ND parties like?
>>
>>769044836
Probably, until you got out and we’re covered in chemicals that were on the soybeans. Then you’d either have to take a nice long shower or be run to the hospital!
>>
>>769044961
Wouldn’t really know, I’m on /b/ so it’s not like I’m popular. From what I’ve heard it’s mostly just beer and weed, college parties are still the same, maybe some harder drugs though. Really no clue.
>>
>>769045076
>>769045076
To parties mang. Live your life have fun.
