UFOs are *real*. The reports are real. The thing is, like a majority of reports can be well explained, be it natural phenomena, optical illusions, unreliability of source, etc. etc. etc. there's been quite a lot of government/military investigations over the course of past few decades and outcome is basically same for all of those: "while majority of reports can be explained, certain portion of reports remain unexplained" therefore UFO.
Now UFO does not equals aliens. What I'm saying is that in some cases, there's some shit (not literal, duh) in the air for which we have no explanation after exhausting all remaining possibilities.
There are few reported and well documented incidents of UFO encounters with commercial airliners and/or military. AATIP has been mentioned here. Those are not drunk idiots in parking lot seeing some weird moving lights in the sky. Those are guys with flying experience, thousands of hours in the air. They know what they've seen. And they also know better to keep their mouth shut. So let's assume what made it into the public is like a tip of the iceberg.

Universe is VAST. And it's OLD. We are very young civilization, it's some million years since we've left the caves, few thousand of years since we start using some tools, and few hundred years of advancing our technological and spiritual knowledge. There are however places we'll never be able to look i.e. outside the observable universe. And to date, we've limited our search almost exclusively to radio waves. It's naive to suggest that anything out there would even be able to detect, let alone produce, radio waves. We could be looking right at them but have no way to detect them. They could also have been extinct for billions of years. With the distances involved, there's just no way to know.
The whole thing is a massive crap-shoot with miniscule odds of success. But we have to keep trying and keep improving our detection methods.
