favored OS and why

I use linux because it is highly customizable and I built a desktop so mac was not an option.
>>
>>768876748
Ubuntu 16.04LTS for most of my desktops and I have Lubuntu 16.04.2LTS on an older Toshiba satellite...still game on a Windows PC though.
>>
>>768876748
Why not create a simpler os that runs windows games so that you dont hang yourself from trying to play games on linux. I got mac os because parents got me a mac and i hate it. Want a shit windows pc to play games fml.
>>
haha
>>
>>768877311
Games could easily run on Linux if the devs wanted them too. It is entirely a business choice, not a technology issue. Devs are just shilled out to using DirectX, and everyone keeps doing it because everyone keeps doing it.
Yeah, it's stupid, I know.
>>
>>768877394
this is clearly fbi bait but what happens when some dumbass clicks it?
>>
>>768876748
Kubuntu, it's pretty gud
>>
MacOS because I'm an Apple faggot and I like my 6 year old Macbook Pro.

Windows 10 because I also have to use AutoCAD.

CentOS on servers. Also FreeBSD on servers. This also covers virtual machines.

OpenBSD on an ancient shitbox used as router/firewall.
>>
>>768877502
Wine works well for running windows games and applications on Linux. Surprisingly well actually.
>>
>>768876748
How is this a learning curve? I mean required skill to lern? or skill you have by the time?
>>
>>768877867
Yeah, it's getting better. But the fact it could run perfectly fine in Linux, yet companies choose to shill Windows is annoying.
I think it would actually would be way easier to emulate a Linux game in Windows. So it's not like switching from Windows would have a downside.
>>
>>768877711
Yeah it's not too bad and it's super easy to customize
>>
>>768878022
Unfortunately as long as windows and Mac are the leaders in the field Linux will get very little in the way of shared compatibility. Which is a shame.
>>
Ubuntu 18.04 Budgie

Know fuck all bout computers but people seem to think this makes me some hacker.

LibreOffice for Open Uni work is perfectly adequate and I can play Terraria and Factorio so I'm happy.
>>
>>768878020
Not OP, but his picture is a bit outdated. It was true years ago, but Linux has become so streamline now that you can install everything you need in a nice GUI installer, and most installers for the more popular distros come with third party support built in, like drivers, mp3/media files, etc.
At this point distros like Ubuntu or Linux Mint are as easy as installing Windows, requiring basic computer skills and no need to use the command line. Everything can be done in the GUI.
>>
>>768878370

Second this...

Cos I'm a spaz and use Ubuntu
>>
>>768878236
I hope the future gens realize how shit Windows / OSX are. Judging by Win10, Microsoft is doing a poor job at keep people interested. I dual boot Mint and Win7 right now, but I hope for a day when I only need Linux for all of my needs.
>>
Ubuntu. There was no learning curve at all, really; it was very intuitive.

Sometimes I feel adventurous and try a different flavor of Linux, but I always come back to this one. It's simple, it works, so why complicate things?
>>
>>768878368
Nah Kali makes you 1337 haxxor
>>
>>768876748
Ubuntu master race reporting in (I dual boot windows for normie shit; HDD is partitioned 50GB for Windows, 950GB for Linux)
>>
>>768878370
>Kubuntu
GUI is for pussies.
>>
>>768878450
Depending on your needs Linux should be more than enough, get the right distro and install whatever packages you want and kiss windows goodbye.
>>
>>768878370
Ehhh... as a life-long Linux user, I have to disagree. I've had to copy/paste My network drivers on every fresh install since like 8.04. Lots of terminal work goes into some of the distro/hardware pairings
>>
>>768878542

Yeah but I like Ubuntu. But Canonical and mah data's...

My Windows 8.1 stopped verifying so I just switched

I liked Solus for a while, then Mint but I've been using Ubuntu Budgie for a few months now.

Anybody here play OpenTTD? It's the only game u need

I use emacs.
>>

Jeez I would have dumped win8 right out of the box...OpenTTD nah but I still jam on Q2A

ubuntu 18.04 for daily use, window 10 for games

i had an ipod once, itunes was so fucking annoying that i never touched an apple product again
>>
Windows 10 because I don't have the patience to fuck around with Linux and just needs something that gets the job done without any bullshit. Mac is out of the question, I'm not paying 4 times the price for obsolete hardware and a ridiculous user interface.
>>
Windows 10 cause it has everything i need for day to day life and there's absolutely 0 benefit for me to use something like linux

i use all 3 but never installed linux on one of my own machines
theres also no reason for that. you can pirate high quality programs for both, no reason to use free ones for linux just because theyre free
>>
>>768879945
I actually left Windows because Windows is to much hassle - everything I've got run on Linux, is supported right out of the box and a full install incl. all software is only 15 gb (and does not grow to 60 after 3 months).
>>
>>768879310
Oh ok. Guess i don't know enough about computers anyways. Specially windows.

"But faggot, why use windows on your desktop?!"
Because I primarily require 3D acceleration on my Host OS and own a Nivida card. I don't want to have a dependency on multiple GPUs, a kvm switch, or virtual hardware drivers.

"Seriously!? Debian?! [insert distro] YOU FAGGOT!"
Debian stable has proven time and time again to be, well, stable. On top of that, there is basically no bloat or extra setup required, it just works. I also prefer apt to yum and don't align well with Arch's repository philosophy.

i don't understand why use vim when there's vscode, atom or sublime
i get that everybody has its own preferences but it seems like too much of a hassle
>>

you can't run vscode atom or sublime on a server. i use atom when coding, and micro for text editing/terminal work
>>
>>768883622
It all depends on the tech stack you're using. I wouldn't do javascript or C# development in vim, but you certainly could. Vim has amazing extensions and tooling for C, C++ and Shell.

>>768883718
why would you write your code on a server's terminal? unless is some sysadmin script it still seems like a lot of trouble

Linux
Got curious what the unix hype was all about, so I went and tried it. I eventually noticed that I hadn't bootet up the windows partition for 6 months, so that's that. Repos and CLI are kinda nice.

(Arch)
Got tired of all the mountain of patches and wrappers debian and opensuse put on their shit. Also too lazy to compile gentoo, and PKGBUILD is the only package format that doesn't make me hate myself.
>>

I use VIM all the time but never installed any plugin. I would love to know more about it, what would you suggest? I do C++ dev amongst other things.
>>
>>768883387
I've been running OpenBSD off and on since 2.5, so it's familiar. The documentation is stupid good. If you're comfortable on the command line it's very comfy. pf is so comfy you'll jizz. Stick with supported hardware and you'll have no problems. You can shortcut a lot and just buy a Soekris box as well. I set up a VPN between two Soekris boxes a bunch of years ago and it was seamless and solid.
>>
>>768884067
On a server you're editing config files. You're gonna use vim or ed. Unless you're a big swinging dick, then you cat files from git into Ansible or some shit.

I installed pfsense awhile back and went right back to openwrt after a few weeks. I don't need anything fancy, just a router with good upnp and qos support. I noticed pfsense's qos was kind of dated, I was looking for something along of the lines of sqm-qos (cake).
>>
>>768884456
All of the config files on our servers are set through a CI/CD pipeline, and no one has the ability to edit them directly.
>>
>>768884765
>sqm-qos
Oh? cake's actually usable now?
I haven't followed the mailing list anymore,
so last I heard codel has been making its way into actual use.
>>
>>768884934
Yeah, it actually works flawlessly with my current setup, a Linksys wrt1200ac, running LEDE 17.01.4. I have very limited bandwidth in my area, so I've always explored qos options. I actually think cake is the successor to fq_codel.
>>
>>768885422
nice. I know what I'm trying out this weekend!
>>
>>768884703
Yeah, I know. Docker and shit are going to change the world. Until you're doing actual work and not web apps that nobody uses and you really care about the metal you're running on. If you're not sshing into a server on occasion and editing a config file you're just copy/pasting from StackOverflow and calling it development.
>>
>>768885835
Haha, nice. I guess I'll just keep following the port to BSD and see what happens there. I'd like to dive into that eco system because it sounds like it really has better support for routing / networking in general.
>>
>>768884765
pfsense isn't exactly pf. I've never bothered with qos because it doesn't apply in my situation, so I dunno.

idk I started coding in vim 12 years ago and never changed. I tried Eclipse for like a week but I hated it. I installed Sublime a couple weeks ago, but I keep forgetting it's there.

Feature-wise, I prefer the keyboard navigation to using a mouse. That's the big thing honestly. Regex find-and-replace is dank, though I'm sure more modern editors have that too.

A practical consideration: I'm a physicist and I have to work on a dozen different servers at DOE labs, university, etc. So rather than worrying about installing a fancy new thing, I just use an editor that's literally always already available. Shit connections also mean X11 forwarding isn't going to be friendly to some GUI editor.
>>
>>768887463
Have you tried JetBrain's products instead of Eclipse? Yes they are usually paid, but they are professional products and work very very well.

Name one feature you can't live without that can't be done by the user more efficiently or conveniently in Windows and Mac. Linuxfags can't do this, if you want to write 1000 lines of scripting to install a program and configure it correctly for the hardware, go learn an actual programming language, which also has the better IDEs on Windows/Mac.
>>
>>768888264
Thanks! I'll give that a try. Do you know if JetBrains' products have any way to work on code that's on a remote host? I see they have vim-emulation which is nice

I would be surprised if that was unavailable but I never needed to use that feature so I can't tell. And yes they do have a Vim-emulation!

I like their products because once you know one of them, if you switch languages they usually have an IDE that has the same shortcuts and workflow as the other one you learned so you don't have to relearn your tools and only focus on the new stuff. I know that is is probably possible with Vim, I still need to explore it more thoroughly.
>>
>>768889658
Not everyone is as poor as Linux users, faggot. Can't even afford your own operating system, then project the fact that all you ever install is shitty no-name shovelware and trialware that we'd easily either find cracked on a torrent working right away or pay for outright. Kek. All the greatest professional software are on Windows/Mac and it pains you to admit it.

This isn't the 90s anymore, Linux isn't hard for the average user.

Enjoy your government backdoors, friend. Open-source software is the way to go.

"Linux users are poor" is a weird take that I really doubt you have evidence to back up. Even if it were true, it's a weird reason to deride Linux. You must not be a very sharp thinker. You graduate high school?? Or nah??
>>
Literally any that's not built fundamentally on shit: doesn't scale with modern technologies, by design makes any kind of actual computer work a pain and, most importantly, using it doesn't make my own
IQ drop like a sackful of gravel. Anything that's not like—let me just take a wild pick—Windows.
