Read Genesis in the Bible. The land was promised to the descendents of Abraham through Isaac (not Ishmael). It has been the right of children of Israel to possess and live in the land. However after many years of fighting (Romans, Crusades, etc.) many Jews were displaced and lived in various parts of the world, especially Europe and North America.
In 1949, after the Jews had survived the atrocities of WWII, the land was carved out by the UK and the state of Israel was established.

During WW1 Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire (which was allied with Germany), while Egypt was a British colony. British forces from Egypt attacked up through Palestine as part of Britain's campaign against the Ottoman Empire.

The new settlers quickly became unpopular (probably because used legal tricks to buy up land and kick Palestinians off land that had been their family's for centuries). There were some riots, and some jews were killed. And by some Jews, I mean the European settlers. Local Palestinian Jews would often be allowed to go free by the rioters.
