26+17 can be broken down into 20+10 and 7+6. You can make a ten with 7+6, with 3 left over. Thus the problem breaks down to 20+10+10+3=43. It takes some getting used to, especially if it's not something you were taught as a kid. That's why some textbook companies suck at illustrating it, and some teachers suck at explaining it, and some parents act like it's harder than calculus.
