Its an experimental teaching style that was brought into the mainstream some years ago due to concerns that kids are too procedural in their work without actually understanding the meaning of what theyre doing. The idea behind common core is to teach not just what operations like addition and multiplication do, but what they MEAN by showing different ways to breakdown numbers and equations.

The idea being that when you're doing more complex mathematics you have a stronger mental grasp of how to handle abstract elements. I think memorizing the numbers at first, like they did when I was a kid, just makes you grasp addition without you realizing it. I agree in that I believe that if everybody understood the basics about the world's largest religions, there would be a much smaller stigma surrounding members of those religions.
The problem with this is that firstly, its very difficult to fit all of that information into one class.
I was schooled in scotland and we actually had a class titled religious studies. But we only got round to learning about Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism.
I would have loved to learn about Islam and Judaism but they just "didn't have time."
