It might be worth investing in skate trainers. I got some the other day just to see what the hype was and even though i'm a pretty good skater i learned that i was jumping wrong. It seems so silly but something so simple as the way you bend your legs/spring up can affect how hard it is to land tricks. skateboards are cool but it takes certain pavement and a tiny little rock will fuck your shit. and its boring if you just have a baskeball court to fuck around in. but with bmx, you can take that shit anywhere and everywhere except bodies of water. with bmx you can build dirt ramps and create a park with just a shovel or you can take that shit downtown and not have to worry if the street has small rocks everywhere.

Look for a good pair of shoes that are comfy but also made for skate don't throw all your money on that at the moment.
Practice the ollie until you make it perfect and high, from there you will get all the tricks you want

Also op, like others have said, you are going to fall. A lot. You need to learn how to roll out of a fall so that you don't seriously injure yourself. Falling correctly is huge and you will really fuck yourself up if you don't learn it asap. I have fallen at 30+ mph a few times on a longboard, even without a helmet a couple times. I would literally be dead if I hadn't perfected the roll to break your fall technique.

This. Used to inline skate when I was young, complete with half-pipes and all that. I had a few spectacular accidents, but never really hurt myself... which I attribute to also doing Jiu-Jitsu at the time which incorporates learning how to fall. Seriously, knowing how to lessen or absorb force that can break bones is invaluable. I've seen enough people break bones from trivial falls because they didn't know how to fall. Don't be like those guys. And in the beginning do wear at least wrist protectors, that's where most serious injuries happen.

Once had a rock lodge between my inliner's wheels when going 45 km/h or so. Threw me forward with a lot of force, but since I knew how to fall I did three rolls on the ground and then stopped myself. Result were a few scratches, but if I wouldn't have known how to properly do that I could have easily seriously injured myself.
I skated for like a year when I was 15. I sucked and looking back I probably looked like a major faggot.
I quit, because I fell hard on my face and cut up the inside of my mouth pretty bad with my braces. I was afraid of ripping my teeth out if I landed on my braces again.

I skated for 9 years from middle school to the first few years in the military.
I've never had a concussion, twisted an ankle, but I've taken a few falls.
People like threes so I'll give three tips that helped
1. Don't do anything stupid. Meaning if you can't hit a heel flip (I'm a goofy footed person so heelflips were my go-to and I couldn't kick flip for shit) then don't try to hit a heel flip down a decent set of stairs. Make sure you can do the tricks at least 80% of the time. Also, if you can't do it at full speed on flat ground, don't try doing ot on uneven ground
2. When you start using ramps, be extremely proficient of doing zero tricks off of them. Be able to cruise the course. Then segment the course and work on the tricks you are proficient at
3. Use a really good board and get familiar with the tools. Know your trucks, bearings, which wheels to use where, risers, types of grip tape and wear the proper shoes. Don't use Van's because they don't provide the greatest support and most of them are flat footed. I wore Josh Kalis DC's for the entire time that I skateboared and it worked well for me.
Just be careful, enjoy it, and don't be the moron that can't hit a kicker ramp very well, try to show off, then you end up knocking the back of your head on the cement. I've seen it way too many times.
Find people that are better than you to skate with, also. You'll learn a lot and it'll motivate.

Also, use the correct deck. I was 180lbs (6' and lifted like a maniac during high school) and I bought a slick deck from a reputable skateboarding catalog and I broke it within the first weekend I got it. I picked up a wide (8") Alien Workshop deck and it would never break.

Cba to read through the comments to see if this was already posted, but if you plan to skate hardcore, to the best of your ability, don't buy a crappy $30 board from walmart. Purchase one from an actual skate shop. If there's none in your area, order one.
There are always two major things to look for in a skateboard that should dissuade you from buying it.
1) Board are supposed to be light and aerodynamic for areal maneuvers and tricks. Most boards should be slightly thicker than an ordinary pencil. If it's somewhere close to a half inch thick, don't buy it.
2) Your Kingpin (Huge pin/bolt that holds your trucks together) should be set at an angle. If it's pointing straight down, you'll have a harder and less graceful time turning and pivoting your board. This is another tie breaker.
Overall, watch tons of Youtube videos. Be careful.
