I used to drive through Coffeyville all the time. I remember when that flood fucked it up.
For a while, an amusing feature was the wood shack with "adult novelties" hand-painted and spelled wrong, near the curve in the highway as it turns north to go to the airport.
There used to be an Amazon warehouse at the airport, but they moved it up to the Kansas City area... they couldn't hire any more people in Coffeyville that could read, I think.

I just remember hearing about the flood. The next time I drove through, there were piles of junk out by the curb, from all the flooded houses. I remember seeing the waterline for months after that, until they eventually tore most of the houses down.

I remember the flood from seeing on the news. It was the Verdigris River, which goes through my town also, but doesn't flood where I live. I live near Lake Oolagah (sort of) and I remember the lake level was so high for months after the flood. Picnic tables and campgrounds were unusable. Ruined our extended family's annual camping trip.

This one was on the east side of town. You went out of town going east on 166/169 and crossed the river. 166 then went straight off to the east, and 169 took a gradual curve to go north. The shack was on the north side of the curve, pretty close to the highway. One-story, long and skinny, white wood building. The "Adult Novelities" was painted on the highway side in black paint.
The very last time I was through there, 169 had been routed away from the airport, and they put in a real interchange at 166 and 169, so the shack I'm thinking of may be gone.
