We have a the 8 hour break, 11 hour rule, 14 hour rule, and a 70 hour rule.
We're allowed to drive a maximum of 11 hours per day. This is only time going down the road, not "on-duty" time when we're doing pre and post trips or whatever.
The 14 hour rule is a consecutive clock. Once we start the day, we only have 14 hours left until we need to take a 10 hour break to reset the clock.
30 minute break is required after 8 hours of being on-duty or driving.
We have 70 hours to work in an 8 day period. At the end of these 8 days, depending on how we "spent" our hours for the week, we can gain recaps. If I work 8.75 hours every single day, then at the end of the 8 day period I'll gain 8.75 hours back and can work indefinitely as long as I'm gaining enough. If I'm not gaining any hours, I do a 34 hour reset to reset the 70 hour clock.

over the road means that you live in the truck usually doing distances of 500 miles a day around the country. the law is that you are allowed 14 hrs of on duty with 11 driving and a mandatory 30 min break within the 8hr time span. there are loopholes and shaddy practices and there are a good number of drivers that dont give a shit about the law. they recently introduced electronic log books this december which make it supposedly harder to manipulate your hours but we will just wait and see about that

We've had electronic tachographs for years now, you put your driver card in and it's linked to the truck and knows if you're driving or not, you can't fuck with it, and if you go over you get pulled up about it. Repeat offences can get you big fines.
56 hours driving a week is our limit, and even then you can't do more than 90 in two weeks. We've gotta have 11 hours between the start of each shift, and a rest of 45 hours weekly.
So yeah, seems we do get it easier than you guys! kudos to you man.

Well the current place I work at always has a trailer loaded for me when I come in, but they're a giant distribution center and get shit done. I've worked at different kinds of places before that can give you anywhere from half an hour to 4 hour wait, just depends how much time you've got left on the clock and how busy they are. I'm not sure there's much of a standard.

Let's see, I said 9 hours driving a day, extended to 10 twice a week, but not in 2 consecutive weeks. 56 hours driving a week, but no more than 90 in any two consecutive weeks.
Then your 45 hours weekly rest, can be reduced to 24 but only every other week. Then there's 11 hours daily rest, that can be reduced to 9 hours 3 times a week, between any 2 weekly rest periods.
You can only drive 4 and a half hours in one chunk before taking a 45 minute break. This can be split into one 15 minute break and one half an hour, but only in that order.
And you can only work for 6 hours before needing a break of half an hour. But that doesn't reset your driving, cause you can't take just a half an hour first. A 45 minute break from driving will reset your 6 hours, but then after another 6 hours, you've gotta take another. You also can't work a shift of more than 16 hours.
So when I go out, if I've been at the yard for 3 hours first, and I drive for 3 hours, I've gotta take a half an hour, which doesn't reset my driving time, so an hour and a half later I've gotta take 45 minutes to reset driving. The second break does reset my 6 hours, so then I'm back to square one. I'd just take a 45 anyway to do driving and 6 hours at the same time, but its' just more to think about.
You get used to it, takes some people a while to keep track of all that, but we're just encouraged to write everything you do in a personal book or get a device to read our tacho cards so we can keep track of stuff. It doesn't really get in the way ever, depending on what kind of trucking you're doing.

It has to do with differing rules and regulations between the US and Europe.
In Europe, the rules favor Cabovers because of how the load area is calculated. In NA, the regs were changed in the 1970's to favor longer wheelbases which are supposedly less destructive on bridges and such.
