I don't really have a compelling explanation to offer, sorry. I just know there's a correlation between prestige/pay and the lack of women in a profession.
For example, take the judiciary branch in France: most new judges/clerck/etc. are women, because the pay has become shit over the years. The same happened for teachers too.
The opposite happened with computer science.
Of course, since laws do not discriminate on gender any more, you will find examples of women in prestigious or well-paid jobs (e.g. trader). But when you look at the stats, they're not great.
