It's like pugs. I genuinely believe they have one of the most amazing dog personalities that no other dog can match, but the idea of there being a total ban on breeding or purchasing pugs should totally be put in place. Those dogs are a physiological tragedy, they didn't deserve what we made them into. I feel infuriated whenever I see a pug bought, all it does is enable another abuse of nature.

This isn't a slippery slope story, anon. Attack dogs have drastically higher mauling rates than any other type of dog. Removing them from the domestic gene pool isn't going to then trail into removing the next highest mauling rate species. Because outside of attack dogs, other dogs purely exist as man's utter bitch, and will only attack if absolutely trained to, or are abused by poor ownership.
Your only argument from this point could be "but wouldn't people just train those peaceful dogs to attack others?" and you'd be right, but realistically there'd be far less people doing this, and the dogs would be far less deadly by design. Pitbulls are so hard-boned and stocky, you can smash its head with a hammer and it'll keep going. Almost every other dog would be obliterated.

In my ideal world, the only dogs people should even bother with are small game breeds and farmhands. I hate small dogs, I remember being attacked by a jack russel when it bit at my face, but I resolved that encounter by throwing it across the room. The only damage I suffered was a tiny scar.
My point will always come back to the fact that if you ban attack dogs, their replacements, if any, will be dramatically less lethal. Which is positive, at the expense of nothing aside from not letting a few people own them because they think it looks cute.
