The South had no chance to even win the war. The North had all the textiles, the arms, the machinery. It had every advantage. The only route to "victory" for the South lay not in beating the North in battle, that wouldn't be enough, but beating them so soundly with a massively overwhelming defeat that they would cause the European powers to ally with them. This would then result in said allies bringing their navies over to stalemate the North's advantage in that arena, thereby forcing a truce between North and South as separate nations.
But the South failed to do this. They won battles, but they were not decisive enough to tip the scales for Europe. The longer the war went on the worse their odds for a Hail Mary became and their final defeat was inevitable.
