My wife and I are interested in starting a farm in the near future. I am interested in agroforestry, especially lane cropping and silvopasture practices. We want to incorporate fruit trees (apples, etc) to our property, as well as some oak, beech, pine, and perhaps maple for its sap long term.
However, my wife is allergic to nut trees (and pretty sensitive too; she can hardly stand being near someone eating nuts, but doesn't really have a problem handling nuts in their shells in the forest). But I would love to incorporate nut trees into our future farm, both for their fruit as well as long term for their timber. Plus raising pigs with chestnuts is a marketable industry. In short, I think nuts are a great investment for a small farm, and would love to see a few huge chestnut or hazelnut trees around our farm.
But with my wife's allergies, it doesn't seem like a good idea; and she's adamantly opposed to the notion of having nut trees on the property. Can you recommend any trees which fulfill a similar ecological function as nut trees? What would you suggest in my case?

Not sure actually. She thinks she's fine with pistachios, since she used to eat them as a child. I don't think she's ever eaten almonds, walnuts, etc, since once her family found out about her allergy she just stopped putting herself around them. The most of a reaction she's had since I've known her is from accidentally ingesting some pine nuts in a salad. Pretty fast reaction, she always carries around benadryl and an epipen.

Job can be fun, always interesting. I've done a lot of timber cruising which is walking through the forest taking measurements and tallying things. The program I took was at Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley and it was very easy. If you can handle highschool you can handle this program.
And that's it. You get a nice shiny silver ring to show you're a legit technician, trained and registered, and there's a whole slew of jobs available from tree marking to compliance to road layouts etc.
