Birmingham is terrible for fish and chips. If you want 'Indian", then great! Diwan Balti in Moseley was my favourite. I didn't find a decent fish and chip shop in the 4 years I lived there.
Stick to the centre when doing touristy stuff, some bits of Birmingham are pretty rough.
The only fish and chips I've had in London have been from places in Chiswick when I worked there last year. Chris' Fish Bar (greasy traditional, but nothing special) and Fish X Chips (less greasy, decent enough).
Other anons are right, your best bet is a seaside town. South coast has some wicked places, but I've never tried any in the north!

2. some kebab shops might do a real portion of chips..there are 2 of those very close to old street station You might go there if you want to check out the trendy bar & club scene) Also theres another area that's becoming trendy for clubbing and food and that's dalston..It really depends on where you stay and where you go..The local proper fish and chips shops are best.

Fuck London, that place is full of Southern sissies and niggers. Go to Whitby in Yorkshire and find 'Magpies', not hard to find, just look for the huge fucking queue and be prepared to queue, it's well worth the wait, fish and chips cooked in beef dripping and are to die for. Trust me on this.
Problem is a lot of shops exchange hands so what was good last year might be under new ownership this year..Also that anon that said london is shit is a moron...Make sure you check out the southbank area, covent garden, hyde park (if it's sunny) and there's a lot more too.
