I remember playing this. Was super easy to hax with some program that changed any active values. Made all my attacks one-hit kills.

HoMM 5 skill system is irritating because it's hard to get the ultimate skills. Some heroes can't even get it because he/she starts already start with a sub-skill in a skill where you need all 3 particular sub-skills. Like Orrin (Elf hero), he starts with Magic Resistance in Luck skill. Say good bye to ultimate skills because he needs 3 Luck sub-skills while he only has 2 slots left.
I don't have 4, it feels like playing Might & Magic games instead of HoMM games. In one the expansion The Gathering Storm, you play 6 heroes in each of their own campaign. Then in the 7th campaign, they all team up against an evil wizard. Of course, there are no troops nor towns in their last campaign. So only 6 super heroes in your army trampling huge stack of strong monsters. Really like RPG games.

Maybe I'm confusing it with something else. It was over 10 years ago. Just taking a look at that screen, though, it looks a lot like the game I'm talking about. The game I'm talking about was a flash game online, no downloadable client.

Yeah, kinda sad that NWC went bankrupt. I just read an interview with Jon Van Caneghem about that. He said that since NWC was bought by 3DO, the management wanted them to milk as much money from the HoMM franchise. So they had to come up with new games every year (sometime less). It degraded the quality of the games. Besides the cost of development increased too. I saw these patterns in some of the game companies I love. All went out of business.
