Hey /b/ I plan on building a PC.

>AMD R5-2600x (using stock cooler)
>16gb ram @ 2666 mhz
>AMD RADEON 580 8gb
>800w psu
>1tb hard drive w/ 250 gb m.2 SSD

It's my first build so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong here /b/.

Don't listen to the haters, your build is good. But maybe get your hands on some faster ram, those ryzen chips looooove fast ram. What mono are you getting? I would like to recommend ASRock, they've never failed me, unlike a few Asus and MSI boards in the past.

>>768169339
2666 is fine, really. I doubt OP's doing anything that needs something more expensive. I'd recommend a larger hard drive though. 1tb fills up fast. Furthermore, I'd recommend an SSHD over a conventional disc drive.
>>
>>768168655
I only have one problem with amd, its how loud their fans are and its not good when a gpu goes over 50c
>>

is that really what anyone recommends these days? imo that could power 4 gpus simultaneously
if it has a nice vent, fine, but you could probably settle for a more silent and cheaper one

It's fine honestly but go to >>>/g/ since they have a thread up for this.

My upgrade is looking pretty similar, although an 800w PSU is definitely overkill

You should be planning on your max power draw to be about 60-75% of what the build is capable of, so it's not hard to argue with 800w being appropriate

Radeon is pretty good in terms of durability and longevity if properly taken care of unlike Nvidias, but the gaming market is favoring Nvidia cards more than the AMD cards.

Agreed on faster ram. 3000 or 3200MHz is worth the extra 5-10% cost. Can't speak for any other mobo brands but ASRock is indeed fine. They're probably all fine, really.

>>768169885
>its not good when a gpu goes over 50c
Most GPUs are rated for 90C+. Several are, literally by specification, perfectly safe at temperatures over 100.

>>768169983
800W is exceptional overkill. An RX 580/GTX 1060 will consume at most ~150W, a Ryzen 5 2600 will take maybe 150-200W with extremely heavy overclocking.

Everything else in the system only takes a tiny amount - motherboards maybe 20W, hard drives and SSDs about 5W each, RAM sticks are under 5W each as well.

In total his build might, *might* consume 450W. Maybe. With extremely high overclocking on both the CPU and GPU, and while running stress tests. For the vast majority of people, anything over 600W is just plain stupid.

>>768170124
/g/ is pretty much as uninformed about computers as /b/

>>768170293
The $1000 build looks a little closer to OP's speed.

>>768170332
Used to be true, but not anymore with modern build quality. Any power supply from EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, Thermaltake, or Cooler Master will be able to deliver 100% of its rated capacity 24/7.

>>768170814
>>768169885
AMD's Ryzen stock coolers are actually really good for stock coolers. Also, the Deepcool Gammaxx 400 outperforms the Hyper 212 series for about the same price.

>>768170890
Not really any point in getting an X470 board if you can find a cheaper X370. There's almost no difference in features.

Getting the 800w psu for future upgrades also I heard 470 chipsets give a better feel for the 2nd gen AMD processers
>>
>>768170982
well that rig will be ok for 4-5 years...after that different cpus, ddr5 ram, etc so i dont think it would be optimal to go crossfire/only more ram in the rig...so imho 600w psu is enough

and after 4-5 years, upgrade mb, cpu, mem, vga
>>
>>768168655
I am an absolute AMD fanboy. Every system I've bought in the past 15 years has used an AMD chip (Athlon XP, Phenom, Phenom II, FX...) and when I got my bonus this year I decided to build a new box...

I built two systems with Asus TUF boards and Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz. One with an i3-8350k/z370 and the other an R5-2400G/B350.

After running benchmarks on the two systems side by side, and the fact that the Vega 11 graphics won't do 4K@60hz, the AMD went back and I got another i3 kit.

I hate to say it, but the Intel is just plain faster. The Ryzen has a fuck ton of cores, but I'll bet you don't actually own a game or application that will make use of more than 4 anyway.
>>
>>768171262
I plan on playing rainbow six, CSGO, possibly this year's COD as well as editing with after effects and Sony Vegas so I might as well use the extra cores
>>
>>768171424
for fullhd csgo will run pretty nice, more fps than you need
>>
>>768171424
>editing with after effects and Sony Vegas
That *might* make use of your extra cores, but I'm fairly confident that the games won't.
>>
>>768171707
Oh no Vegas and after effects will trust me. I'm coming from a two core 4gb $200 Walmart laptop which I just broke by frying the ram like God damn KFC
>>
>>768171262
Yeah you're comparing chips in two different price classes. The 2400G with an overclock-ready motherboard is ~$235. The 8350K with an overclock-ready motherboard is ~$290. That's a huge gap, especially at this price level.

And, if we look at the UserBenchmark scores: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-8350K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2400G/3935vsm433194

The 8350K isn't better, it's just simultaneously more expensive and faster. No shit a more expensive CPU is faster than a cheaper CPU.
>>
AMD is shit
>>
>>768171424
Most games wont use extra cores, gaming is not a multi-threaded application. Basically:

o If you want tro video edit/encode, render 3d graphics, etc.. Use a RYZEN
o If you want to play games, etc.. Use Intel i7, an i5 will be OK, but the i7's are slightly more expensive than the ryzens but offer better gaming performance as they've been perfected over the last 8 or so years.

>>768171424
Yes, OP, Vegas will perform much better with the Ryzen than it will the i3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rz_kk0H2ck#t=2m58s

Granted that's an i5 7500 at 3.8GHz instead of the 8350K's 4GHz, but that's barely a 5% difference.

The difference between the R5-2400G and the ie-8350k is $5

https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B079D8FD28
https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i3-8350K-Processor-Unlocked-BX80684i38350K/dp/B0759FWJDK

The difference in the board I picked was $50, which I personally don't feel is that big of a deal. With the stuff I run (primarily older games, emulators, media, etc.) the i3 is a way better option. When encoding Bluray to x265 I also got significantly better performance in Handbrake with the i3 than the AMD.

If I absolutely had to have more cores I still have my desktop that I built many years ago running an FX-8120, or my living room media center running an FX-6300 (I built that one CHEAP).
>>
>>768171962
source: your ass

The 2700X outperforms Intel's housefire 8700K in 90% of games, and in situations where it underperforms it's within 2%. While also being cheaper. And using less power. And making less heat.

Intel has been developmentally bankrupt for several years now. The Ryzen 2000 series shits on anything Intel has to offer, and when Zen 2 is released later this year/early next year, Intel will be completely caught with their pants down.

They're struggling for a few % gain generation over generation while AMD is literally doubling performance every year. They're at parity now (except in workstation/server loads where ThreadRipper and Epyc straight up demolish Intel's trash) and within the next year, AMD will be the hands down better choice at all price levels.

Intel is shitting its pants. And you, my friend, are either an astroturfer or you're a hugely bluepilled fanboy.
>>
>>768168747
>>768168830
I'm a lifelong AMD fan but they have had some problems recently. I've never bought one that I've been disappointed with but I kind of missed the last couple of generations due to poverty. They were really competitive up until the end of the Core 2 Duo era. An AMD processor will be fine for most purposes, but Intel has left them in the dust for a decade, maybe.

I have had major issues with several of the Radeon cards I've purchased, so while I'd been loyal to AMD for processors, I've been much more pleased with my Nvidia graphics cards. Now, I get the sense that for most people that's kind of flipped.
>>
>>768172618
>I have had major issues with several of the Radeon cards I've purchased, so while I'd been loyal to AMD for processors, I've been much more pleased with my Nvidia graphics cards.
I had the opposite experience, but I've noticed that certain brands tend to fuck their cards up hard (Gigabyte, Asus). I've been running XFX Radeon cards for a few years now and have 0 problems.
>>
>>768170716
You are an idiot. You can't "go quad" channel just by adding more RAM because it has more slots. The processor supports dual channel only and running 4 sticks with pretty much any Ryzen will not allow you to run at the highest rated speeds that Samsung B-Die RAM can offer.
>>
Your a fucking faggit I hope your mom gets anal and Boob cancer
>>
>>768172556
>The difference between the R5-2400G and the ie-8350k is $5
>The difference in the board I picked was $50
So the difference in price was $55.

$290 is significantly more expensive than $235, especially when you're building a budget PC.

You can't just say "oh well it doesn't matter" - yes, it does. That's the whole fucking point of sticking to a budget.

Stop misleading OP toward buying a shittier product.

>>768172618
>as a dedicated user of [product] I'm starting to have issues with [product]
Never thought I'd see the day where Intel was literally paying astroturfers to spread bullshit on /b/, of all places.

AMD is a better choice at all price levels. You lost. Sorry.
>>
>>768172765
One of the "issues" I had with my Ryzen was the fact that I couldn't get above 2933. The Intel runs 3200 with 0 effort.

>>768172798
>So the difference in price was $55.
>$290 is significantly more expensive than $235, especially when you're building a budget PC.

Note the "I picked" part there. Gigabyte makes a board with the same chip for $105. That lowers the gap closer to $15 if you compare to something like the ASRock B350 Pro.

So, how much difference does $15 make? Slightly over $1/month over the course of a year?

I'm just giving my input. The i3 can be built almost as cheap as the AMD, and for my purposes the i3 is the better pick. Now, if he was an engineering or architecture student I would say go AMD all the way, but if that were the case he wouldn't have time to play video games.
>>
>>768172569
>The 2700X outperforms Intel's housefire 8700K
Only in multithreaded apps, not most games.
>cheaper
Yes but for a reason.
>And using less power.
Nope. AMD have higher TDP than intels
>>
>>768168655
Don't get 800W PSU, get a quality 500 or 600W unit instead.
>>
>>768171230
MultiGPU setups are a meme, and that's pretty much the only reason you'd ever need more than 600W unless you decide to get fullretard and get Firelake-X
>>
>>768170333
thats ok, you're allowed to be an idiot if you insist
>>
>>768173396
Agreed. I got an 80+ White Thermaltake Smart 600w for like $40.
>>
>>768173184
>Note the "I picked" part there. Gigabyte makes a board with the same chip for $105. That lowers the gap closer to $15 if you compare to something like the ASRock B350 Pro.
And I can pick a Z370 board for $200 and a B350 board for $60. Arbitrary choices don't matter.

The cheapest you can pay for an 8350K and overclockable motherboard is $290. The cheapest you can pay for a 2400G and overclockable motherboard is $235.

The 8350K is significantly more expensive, and not any faster, than the 2400G. You're just wrong.

>Now, if he was an engineering or architecture student I would say go AMD all the way
Or if he plays video games or edits videos or edits photos or makes music or uses his computer at all

>>768173294
No, it is "most" games. The vast majority perform better with an OC'd 2700 than the 8700K.

Cheaper because AMD hasn't taken advantage of a decade of anti-competitive practices (which, by the way, are now biting Intel in the ass)

>Nope. AMD have higher TDP than intels
At stock speeds. We're talking power consumption after overclocking. Intel turns into a house fire once you overclock them enough to outperform equivalent processors from AMD.
>>
>>768171962
>Most games wont use extra cores, gaming is not a multi-threaded application.
How's 2016? Most games from the past two years do, in fact, run better if you have at least 4 cores with SMT.

>No, it is "most" games. The vast majority perform better with an OC'd 2700 than the 8700K.
As an AMD fan, you're full of shit. 8700k delidded and OCd will outperform 2700x is the vast majority of games. It's also significantly more expensive(not to mention delidding will invalidate the warranty) and it performs worse in practically everything else, but if you really want the best gaming performance(and don't care about anything else) and money is not an object, the 8700k is better.

Let me go directly back to your own argument...

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-8350K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2400G/3935vsm433194

The i3 is:
25% faster on single-core tasks at factory clock
32% faster on single-core tasks with OC
36% faster on quad-core tasks at factory clock

I'm running Kodi, Dolphin, and playing random shit on Steam. For my needs the i3 is going to smoke the AMD.
>>
>>768173926
Yea, and?
>>
>>768171018
PSUs should never run at 100% of their rated wattage at all times due to cap degradation over time, BUT more importantly because this is not where they are best in their efficiency curve (they are rated for peak efficiency at 50% load).

Still agree that ~600W or less is right for this build.

Also, the reason to get X470 is XFR 2 which nearly eliminates the need for OCing.
>>
>>768174100
that is retarded you shold know it, 600w 85%+ psu is plenty
>>
>>768174044
>32% faster on single-core tasks with OC
>36% faster on quad-core tasks at factory clock

Oh yea, and that's a ~30% performance bump for $50.
>>
>>768173670

>>768174220
That's what I put in my new media center, but the other build is a bit different. I also had plans at one time to go with 8 15k SAS drives, but with LSI CacheCade it's kind of not necessary in my environment.
