Hey /b, I'm doing a philosophy paper using the Natural law theory on abortion. Which side should I argue for, Pro-life or Pro-choice?
Dubs decides the side.
Trips gives the reason.

Abortion is based. Rolling.
Firstly that's an ethics paper. Secondly, if you have to use natural law, then go for pro life, obviously. One of the primary precepts is reproduction so it goes against divine law and natural law to inhibit that function. Compare it to utilitarianism of you're feeling cheeky. The hedonic calculus could be used in situations where a person has been raped for example, and this could justify abortion as it's the maximum good for the maximum number.
Natural law can't be pro choice, no point arguing against the grain if you don't have to. Your essay doesn't have to reflect your personal views, so make it easier on yourself by just going for the stronger argument.

The question is to discuss the issue of abortion while using the natural law theory. What would a natural law theorist say, and would he be correct? Why or why not?

>I'm doing a philosophy paper
Stopped reading there. Go to the library, numb nuts.
you should go for pro-science
aborted babies should be sent to government facilities to the development of stem cells, or, the woman or couple should be able to sell their kids to the government before they turn 2 years old, so that they can be used for scientific research and hel the development of medicine
Why abort when you can support? Give babies to research fucking mongoloids, better than wasting them into a trash can

Well you've got Aquinas, who actually made the natural law theory. Again, his idea of precepts is supported by synderesis, the concept of doing good while avoiding evil, and this to him was a God given faculty. If according to God given logic we have to preserve life, that's a justification for the pro life argument. Consider interior and exterior motives as well, and maybe drop another of the primary precepts in too. Arguing against is mostly utilitarianism or situation ethics, which are relativist rather than absolutist theories, so as I said, pick up on Bentham's calculus, use Mills principle of liberty and preference utilitarianism if you like that shit. Remember to criticise each argument in the face of abortion, not their strength in general.
To support natural law, bring in Kantian ethics as a deontological theory that calls us to universalise our acts in his categorical imperatives. This means that if we do something we have to be comfortable with letting everyone in the world being able to do it by law. This could lead to the destruction of the human race so it's not reasonable. Talk about his concept of duty for justification of WHY we should follow the imperatives.
After you've got a for and against argument set up, think about where you stand last. Don't let your own opinion cloud your judgement here. Go with the strongest argument as it's easier to get marks. Natural law has god's authority, but this only applies if you believe in God, and isn't a view compatible with liberal society. It's deontological, meaning it focuses on the act rather than outcome, and this can mean people are put in bad situations because of a "good" act. Utilitarian perspectives are versatile and personalist, which helps a specific person through their specific situation. Since you don't have to argue for the side of natural law like I assumed, rip it to shreds because it's a shit theory.
Good luck, I'm going to go and fap.

how long have you been on this finngolian yak domestication forum?
>>768150113 Not really. I already wrote most of the paper on the background of natural law theory. Then I discussed the issue of abortion using Natural theory from both sides. Also, I put in what the Natural law theorist would say if he/she was in this situation. Concluding with what my opinion was on abortion. In the end, I was just curious to see what y'all had to say.

Pro life because it's the easier argument.
