I've had moose. It's honestly only rare because it can't be legally sold, only given away so you kinda need to know someone who actively hunts moose.

Yeah, in the U.S. it's illegal to sell because they can't be farmed to maturity without becoming very ill or outright dying, they just don't handle captivity well. It's sort of a protection on them so people don't hunt them to extinction for profit off their meat. TBH I wish I could find someone here in NY to buy it off of under the table. My boss hunts them and every now and then I'll get some moose steak free, but the average moose has 300lbs of usable meat, and costs $150 to get processed. I'd gladly pay double maybe even triple to someone for the meat, it's so fucking good.

You're not taking in account the cost of the tag (usually a couple hundred), the cost of the actual hunt (could be thousands) and the labor cost of going in and killing a moose and packing it back out (unless you kill it from the vehicle lol). I would say a fair price to buy moose off someone is $15 a pound

Cool thanks for the info. I'm from MN and they suspended moose hunting indefinitely with some exception of native tribal land in the northern part of the state. Which of course people abuse since I know I've seen moose meat for sale in the Red River area while fishing before.
