It is this way by design, to focus the enemy troops into specific areas. Not just in open areas, but enemy units would try and break down certain parts of the wall, but this still funneled the enemy to a choke point.
And the big thing is it isn't one continuous walls, but many strategically placed walls, often with the region and landscape in mind. You can look up maps and see where each section is.
