I prefer reading the manga first for the WHOLE series before watching the anime, but since you reached to RE and can't understand, I recommend you read the manga first. People won't understand why Kaneki has new friends, or other spoilers, since all that story and detail is all in the manga.
Remember, every anime always leaves out something from the manga.
