Why not just cut out the middle man and all restaurants self service? There might be less customers and people might think of the restaurant more as a fast-food joint, but otherwise it fixes the problem. I understand that high class restaurants will still require servers, but the restaurants most people here are probably talking about are probably the ones you'd go with a noisy family to.

As someone who tips a lot- don't tip your servers, they don't do shit for you, or for the restaurant, and do not deserve it at all. DO tip your bartenders- they will become true friends from that starting point (over time, not day 1).

When I was in high school I was a bus boy making barely $7/hour, servers about $4.50 or so. Yet they would always get tips, and never once shared their tips with me. So by the end they were making much more, for doing seemingly similar work. Most of them would never clean their tables, even though servers are suppose to remove dishes as the meal progresses.
Most servers are lazy ungrateful entitled assholes who have never worked any other job and don't know what it means to actually put in a days work.
