Legitimately try to get SNAP benefits. The worst thing they can do is tell you that you aren't eligible. Also, have you considered visiting a food pantry/bank? They provide free food, and the amount of times you can use it vary from organization to organization.
I volunteered at a food bank for a sociology project and we were putting pork chops, chicken legs, day old pie and cake to families of two or more. Google what's available in your area and use it.
With that being said, you didn't say you were charged with anything. Count that as a blessing. A friend of mine had to spend several weekends in the county for stealing food from Wal-Mart.

We primarily gave out canned vegetables and fruit, rice, various pastas like instant ramen, cereal, and bread, and some form of a sweet like cookies or cakes, depending on the family size. We also gave out milk and various frozen meats when we had it. Keep in mind that it's a "first come, first serve" thing and we ran out of items all the time when I was volunteering.
You might want to google some recipes for these kinds of things. I've seen people pull off miracles with what's given out.
