His generals wanted retreat from the eastern front, about 400 miles west to stay properly supplied - but Hitler refused their plans as it would be seen as embarassing.
As per the holocaust, I don't understand why he had to be so cruel. He had millions of prisoners who could have been forced to work (which most did) to support the war effort but they were also starved to death. Very stupid and waste of resources.

Growing up, he was always exposed to anti-semetic literature so it's not surprising he turned out the way he did.
