On one hand, every species that winds up running out of resources experiences a natural die off. My girlfriend tried to argue this as being a fault in his reasoning. Technically she isn't wrong, but I think it's more about keeping up a certain level of functional society.
In one situation, if you let everyone just... fail of their own accord, you'll see the fall of an advanced civilization until the groups left are able to stabilize into a series of tribal groups.
In the other, you live under a constant fear of losing your loved ones. If it was all at once, you would have to live with the loss and the fear of it happening again.
I think the way he did it was maybe the best way. It just happened. Most people did not know. One day, people were just gone. They'll eventually get past it and after a few generations it'll be an answer-less question.

With the gauntlet, Thanos is basically God. 99% chance that the way they defeat him in the second movie is tricking him into giving up the gauntlet - which it may be hinted at that he lets them win so that he can have Gamorra back.
Once the Avengers get the gauntlet they will bring everyone back from the dead - just like in the comic.
Dr. Strange said, "It was the only way." The implication is that they have to let Thanos win so that he can see it wasn't what he really wanted, which is why he will lose and let them undo all the damage he did.
