I know this is a joke (hopefully) but I still want to explain why they don't just drop water onto the lava.
For starters, they would need a lot of water and it would be very expensive. The lava would continue to flow out and they'd just need to keep getting more and more water until it finally stopped flowing.
They'd need a lot of planes at once and they'd probably need the kind used for crop dusting.
The size of the lava flow is probably a lot bigger than it looks. There's also the problem with toxic fumes.
