You're *technically* correct. The AR-15 was designed to be a military weapon: the M16 (original) is just the military designation for the original AR-15, which was based on the AR-10. Neither of those two is in production any more because both were insanely unreliable weapons.
But "AR-15" as it's used nowadays refers to civilian variants of the M16A2, M-16A4 and M4A1; all of which are "technically" AR-15s.

The AR15 is a pseudo-military weapon loaded with hunting ammo.
Military weapons (rifles etc) are required by Convention to be loaded with Full Metal Jacket ammo only. No soft-nose, hollow-point or expanding/explosive ammo. FMJ is not preferred for hunting because it doesn't transfer all the bullet's energy to the target. More like an arrow or lance.
Even then, some FMJ ammo has only the thinnest copper skin (barely more than plating), which peels off when it strikes. The bullet then distorts, tumbles and leaves almost untreatable wounds. Other FMJ ammo, outlawed by Convention, has a composition that makes it tumble when it strikes, even if it stays whole.
So, if you're strutting around with your AR15 loaded with hunting ammo you're a poseur. Real fighters use FMJ.

It doesn't change a damn thing worth noting, the differences in ergonomics is ultimately a difference in personal taste. That and AR is highly modular, so a grip that is seperate from the stock is preferable to the one peice stock/grip/handguard seen on the mini 14. Hell, you can put a non pistol grip or an attached combination stock and grip on an AR pattern rifle, and people do that, even where it is not required, because they prefer it.
