Just read in a local newspaper about tipping. Even the union discourage tipping because its against workers rights. Its the restaurants duty to pay its workers. And they even mention usa as an example of tipping culture getting out of hand. Topic of the article was certain restaurants started writing "tip not included" on the bill just too fool tourists to tip. Well, tip isnt included because you are not expected to tip. the place I worked at only paid me $5 an hour. sure, there is a "law" that says they have to compensate you the difference between that and minimum wage if you don't earn the difference in tips, but they can (and do) get around it by making reports anyways claiming that it was cash. so I not only didn't get minimum wage, but I got stuck with a tax bill for tip money I didn't get.
I was a pizza delivery guy, and honestly even if they paid us minimum wage the job isn't worth it. to drive legal, I would have to get commercial insurance on my vehicle which at the time was in excess of $200 a month. then there is gas money, which they only pay you based on their "as the bird flies" calculation of mileage and it is only one way, meaning I didn't get compensated for the return trip.

You took citation of my order, smiled whilst doing it, brought my order to me, all without error. Doing your job, and not fucking up in the process shouldn't net you a special reward. I literally can't be wrong because of how math works. If the employees aren't being paid their entire wage by the establishment then it's being subsidized by the consumer. If the subsidy goes away then the establishment now has to pay the difference or find an employee willing to work for less. If the establishment pays the difference then they either need to charge more for food or take a loss on profits.

Second is that the American food industry is the way it is because it relies on tips to pay their entire front house staff. It's the only reason that bill wasn't 150+. Restaurants spend almost all of it's earnings on overhead, trying to up the quality of food and the atmosphere as much as possible. Not paying their staff is a good way to help give people the best possible time.
