That layout is awful. The numbers along the left should be separated and some of the lines should be thicker at even intervals so you can more easily track where you are in the middle of the grid.

Yeah, it does look pretty cancerous. As far as i understand, they use two digits to define the number of cells filled, so 02=2 cells, 20=20, 01=1 and so on.
