I honestly believe that keeping their controller design consistent from the PS1 to the PS2 was Sony's master stroke. And really, the layout is kinda stolen from the SNES which everyone had as well which made the jump from SNES to PS1 easier.

guy states, IT'S ABOUT THE GAMES. The gamecube was the best console of that gen and it sold like shit because all the popular games (GTA, Gran Turismo, Call of Doody and whatnot) were on the PS2. It's just the way it goes.
The vidya market is very hard to predict. Consider the current gen: at launch people were shitting all over the PS4 because of it's short library compared to the XBone, and the XBone still has more games, but the PS4 is selling more anyway because some particular PS4 games are way more popular than whatever the XBone offers.
