in the movie he wants to destroy only 50% of life because he wants peace and balance in the universe. he actually indicated that he preferred not to do this and thinks that it was the only way.
the PROBLEM here is that mr good guy thanos somehow ignores the fact that if he has all 6 stones he could literally do anything, in both the comics and the movie. so why did he just not use the stones for absolute peace and prosperity instead of just destroying half of life?

Incorrect. In the movie, the Gauntlet has limits. Killing half of everyone very nearly destroyed it.
Secondly, it was less about actually bringing peace and balance and more about proving himself right in his own mind. His world ignored him and ended up dying, so now he has to find validation by making it work -even if it doesn't actually work in the long run- so he can sit back and tell himself that he did all he could.

The solution is to educate and empower, then you don't have these population growth issues.
