The only objective good in this existence is virtue. What do you do to pursue virtue?
I'm certainly not suggesting any a priori as far as virtue is concerned, but do you not agree that virtue is the only objective good? Don't we have the responsibility to pursue it?
You're asking present day folk to describe a term you're classically referencing. The very concept of virtue has changed by time period and location. If you intend virtue as the classic Stoics defined it, say so. If you refer to a more modern concept of virtue, then be clear about it. Otherwise all you seek to do is muddy the waters and foster trolls.
>tl;dr, OP just learned about philosophy and wants to prove how enlightened he is
Can you even read? I already conceded that point. And GOOGLE? I've been reading Derrida before you could google. Ffs a gal tries to come up with a new tread to interact with other than bbc and traps, and these fucking know nothing autists shit all over everything. You mother will die in her sleep tonight
I search for extrinsic virtue and find it meaningless as nothing can be sure to exist, but I exist and my intrinsic virtue is affected by the outside world. In a sense my tendency is to study virtue and try my best to display it to other human beings, as their happiness due to my virtue is definitely worth the pursuit
Simply put, in every all-things-considered, normative value judgement, virtue is the only preferred outcome for all actors in a system
No matter what goals, habits, hobbies, interests I have I noticed I am never content. I am always striving for more. There is a new plan everyday yet what can I really achieve? I learn all the time and spend most my time learning about myself and my own thoughts as opposed to social activities and learning how to better interact. It feels more fulfilling and interesting living for only myself. Life is is my own to live and die and its as simple as that. I don't need a subjectively great life, just another day to experience it and ponder on what more I can experience.
Of course, the free will bestowed unto you by nature allows you to live such a life; howerver, regardless of how rogue you may feel, we human are a gregarious species. We live and die for the sake of each other, and it is through virtue that we ensure the best life, all-things-considered
I am not necessarily that free. I do work and enjoy work that provides a service. I do believe in humanity and love people, but I do not want to be involved. I just want to experience a life where I can think a lot, not worry and enjoy myself.
Most people I meet are only happy if they achieve what society told them is success and most of them aren't even that happy with their lives, but are happy with their status.
You have as much free will as you please. Virtue is not about living up to society's standards (whatever that may be), but it does demand you live for the sake of others for a life well lived.
False. Virtue is, by definition, the only objective good.
I read this book once. Should probably revisit it myself, but if you want to live a simple and proud life I think you can take examples from it.

Bullshit, yes we use it in diffrence ways but virtue has never changed in the context of philosphy. Even after Plato, Socretes, and Aristotle have long passed Machievelli realized what virtue is even after his new modes and orders (not that he believed in having high virtue). Even John Locke and Hobbs had the right idea about what it is to be virtuoes. Just because people are retarded doesn't mean anything changed.
Trite and obvious. We should not "seek" wisdom and knowledge. We should practice wisdom and knowledge. The rest we already are in the midst of doing
in that case I go with
until proven otherwise
Why not both? Yes I understand that we do already gain knowledge through living but why not seek it? What if their is something better to ourselves that we didn't know? You could be looking at cave images on a wall and not even realize it anon, enlightenment involves learning after all.
We are not in disagreement, but your semantics are flawed.
Free will to act upon your so-called ego was given to you by nature, yet you are not living in accordance with nature when you exercise it thusly.
the road to hell is paved with good intentions. there is no virtue without wisdom. one cannot make virtuous choices or actions without true understanding of the consequences of actions / choices. true understanding is absent without a realization of the true nature of reality. those who attempt to act or choose with virtue without wisdom are simply acting in ignorance / delusion, like the blind leading the blind.
No we do disagree in some reguard, you say that we are in the middle of learning and our focus should be in practice. I think we should go out of our way to learn more then we practice.
i don't evoke anything christian whatsoever. i explicitly, and specifically reference buddhism.
i continue to refute your belief that virtue somehow precedes wisdom, which is an obvious falsehood and impossibility. your notion of virtue is vague, sloppy, and errant from it's true meaning; indicative of someone lacking the ability to reason clearly.
Road to hell... blind leading the blind (book of Matthew... these are part of the Christian ethos. Do try to keep up. At least Google a good response. Wisdom IS PART of virtue? What is so difficult to comprehend, my lackadaisical "Buddhist" friend?
God is Dead, the only way to save him is a true philosphy bored.
you might want to educate yourself on some history, these concepts, such as acts done with good intentions but in ignorance, leading to hell realms, or the blind / deluded leading the blind, were part of buddhist canon before christianity ever existed. DERP. kys faggot
Okay you are now spout complete, ignorant nonsense. You lack contextual knowledge of the subject matter, and, frankly, you speak like someone who took a philosophy class and read zen the art of motorcycle maintenance. Go the fuck to sleep you monkey
I seize the power to manifest an imperfect shade of virtuous nature from arbitrary sources, arbitrarily. I do not see an absolute morality from where I stand. I cannot find an objective value that is the quality of being virtuous. There is no true proper or improper way to do anything. Nothing in nature of that quality is seated within my reach. I do what seems good, even when it is not good. I do what is not good, even when it seems good. What I do is ultimately not calculable in terms of an absolute righteousness- or, that is to say that I cannot know to be able to do such a thing. Or, to say that something of that nature is even calculable or extant. This is because I cannot perceive good as concrete, or having a truly distinct nature. What is good? I don't actually know. I believe I feel what is good. I believe I can reason that something is good. I cannot convince myself that I know what good is.
So I arbitrate when it comes to maximizing the benefit between myself and other actors within a given system. And I don't always act in a just manner.
you're deluded. you're wrong. you suck at logic / analysis. you're uneducated. and you're entitled, you think your culture owns ideas and originated them, rather than admitting credit to other cultures. aka you are uncultured. inexperienced. a noob. you sound like a petulant teenager. so yeah, you're getting trolled, by your own stupidity, and because it's easier for you to accept someone is just fucking with you, than to accept you're being fucked with BECAUSE of your ignorance.
In both cases, it reads like someone is being fucked with and cannot discern that they are being fucked with. In the former case, someone is fucking with someone. That can only happen if they are not aware that they are being fucked with- if they suffer ignorance in the face of being fucked, hence the matter of fucking being allowed to occur, and the allowing of wool to be pulled over the sharpie penis above their brow. The latter, someone is being fucked with because of their ignorance.
Put simply, someone is being fucked with for their ignorance, or someone is being fucked with for their ignorance. Maybe that was redundant?
