I feel like he was the final step in the transformation of The Daily Show from "Comedy with a side of News" to "News with a side of Comedy". I find him to be terrifically important in the current political moment, and he does what he can with what he gets. John Stewart could make legitimate jokes, he could roll with stuff and riff on stuff, while also posing very good points and being able to turn off the funny when he needed to. I feel like Trevor Noah is constantly thrumming on a low level of skepticism and humor, and lives for "common sense vs. reality" style humor. When that's all you've got, you get bored quick.
BUT Trump and the rise of open racism in America (as well as all sorts of -isms and general bigotry) basically kept him afloat. I was centrist when he came about and couldn't have cared for him less, but since then I've drifted further and further left and understand how important he is as a figurehead.
