And as it turns out, that's one of my answers to your question: an omnipotent god can give us freewill while still preventing suffering because he is omnipotent. He could make 2+2=5 if he wanted to. The only possible reason things could be like this is if he wanted every living thing to suffer.
And even without resorting to omnipotence, he could solve the problem of free will vs. evil by making good people with free will, but all the bad ones that are going to commit rapes and murders, he simply neglects to make.
