If x+y=3 then x has to be equal to 3 - y, that is x= 3 - y
Then you can substitute x in the other equation for 3 - y:
3y + x = 5
3y + (3 - y) = 5
Then:
3y + 3 - y = 5
2y + 3 = 5
2y = 2
y = 1
If y=1, x + y = 3 becomes
x + 1 = 3
So x has to be 2
