Hey /b/ looking to buy a repeater/extender to boost my wifi. I'm thinking of getting one you just plug into a wall outlet. Do these work better than one I can plug into my computer? What are you using /b/?

I'm thinking this one.

What I really want to know is, if anyone has one of these and how well does it work for you?
>>
Why not just buy a better router instead repeater. In my experience they lags pretty bad
>>
Don't get one that plugs into the PC, those are junk. Get one that plugs into the wall. Depending on your level of tech savvy they're not hard to set up.

If you actually care about internet speed and your current ISP plan provides over 30 Mbp/s, make sure you get one with and use the 5Ghz band.

Get one and place it about 40% of the way between your router and the furthest point you want to have service. Make sure you configure it properly in the http page when you connect it. You can do this by finding out what IP address your router DHCPs to it, and then typing into your pc whatever IP address it has.

Ex: https://192.168.1.XXX:80

I ujsed to be a data services install technician,m now I'm stoned AF and on B

I wish I could, but not an option. I need something that will reach 30 feet.

This guy knows.

>>767602578
Not tech savvy at all. I was hoping to just plug it in maybe install some software and make a password for it.
>>
>>767602578
What brands do you recommend?
>>
>>767602892
Meh, you can handle setting up a repeater. Easy stuff.
>>
Just run cable

Change IP? Not sure what you meann.
You can get a new IP on your local network by going to command prompt and typing ipconfig /release then pressing enter, then ipconfig /renew

That'll get you a new IP on your private network.

To hide your public IP, you have to go through a proxy, spoof your IP address, RDP into an unsecured computer, or use a VPN (either paid service or set up your own)
>>
This one looks cool. What should I pay for something like this? This one is $55, the one in op is $35. Is there such a thing as too cheap to work right?
>>
>>767602892
It's as simple as following the instructions on the packaging and pressing some buttons, you can figure it out.

>>767602934
Netgear for all the shit they get, can actually be pretty good. I hooked up a guy I installed for on some side work, and the netgear wifi extender kept his 110 Mbp/s speeds all through his massive house.
Just make sure you use the 5Ghz band, cannot stress this enough.

If you can run a cable get a Wi-Fi access point. I ran cat5 through my house from the router to the farthest room and set up a nighthawk ac1900. It covers most of my house and all the back yard and garage. What it doesnt cover, the original router does.
>>
>>767602029
I moved my router and have a long ass ethernet cable
>>
>>767603049
On the router. And I use Linux.

Dynamic IP. How do I change that.
>>
>>767602029
If you have a PC, another good way to increase connection is to get your antennas off the back and on top. You can get extensions, antennas with extensions already on them, or you can get weird like me and drill holes in the top of your pc and mount them on top.

Oops. I fuckedu p guys. its shiuld be http://192.168.1.XXX:80

https uses port 443
so if we did that it's https://192.168.1.XXX:443
but most residential routers don't bother with https, which is kinda a security flaw, but you'll need the gui password anyway which is on the router. I'm a bit off topic as I mentioned I'm progressively getting more stoned.

>>767603412
change ip of the router?
Like, the default gateway/network ID? That's usually hard programmed into the router.
If you want to change t6he IP of the devices on the network you can log into the router and turn off DHCP, only thing there is you'll have to manually assign static IPs to ewach device.

changing anything OTHER than your private network IPs has to be done through your ISP or an outside servbice. Although, most WAN IPs are dynamic anyway, becauise unless you pay for a sstatic WAN IP, you get whjatever your isp gives you until the IP lease renews.
>>
I just cannot decide what to get.
>>
I used to use a repeater for leeching off free wifi from Starbucks,/McDonald's etc.. to my house/work place. It's useable but it's lag as fuck,

All of this.
>>
>>767605034
Because you device send a request to the repeater then the repeater send to the main router.
>>
>>767605052
Should I have mentioned I really only want to use it for streaming?
